Painted console - good or bad idea?

So I hated the dull silver painted plastic console / stereo bezel... And because I was cleaning it once with an alcohol based cleaner that started taking paint off (oops).

So after many... Many hours sanding, painting, sanding, fixing screwups, sanding some more, repainting, clear coating... Sanding and polishing.

Keep in mind my car is black with black billet interior stuff.

Thumbs up or down?

Thanks.

I was a bit worried as replacements from for would run $500.

And I totally messed up on the center console when painting the first coat. I picked it up (to get a better angle on one of the sides) and it flexes... Crinkled all the paint. Took hours of sanding. Then restarted.

Rattle cans (duplicolor body / clear).

I think krylon would have been easier!!!

Re: Painted console - good or bad idea?

Looks good.

FYI, a little trick with rattle cans I've learned that helps. Heat up a pot of water & set the cans in them. It warms everything up & atomizes the paint better; it flows better & smooths out great. Just don't leave the cans in too long!

Grant wheel (brother's performance).

Wasn't cheap... You do get a substantial amount back of you send back your old one).

My OE leather got cut... Had too.

That's why you don't leave it in too long. Just get it warm. It's amazing how much better the rattle can works after getting warmed up. Nice even flow, and you can use up ALL the paint--the end-of-the-can spatters are almost gone.

Looks very nice! Please let us know how the paint holds up with normal wear. I would love to paint mine black like that.

Go for it... Just do not move the bottom console at all while spraying... It will flex and crinkle and provide hours of gratifying sanding to fix! Very flexible and thin plastic in some areas.
