MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit

Anyone have experience with this? Seems like a cool mod to help with other mods, but I have concerns. Do you have to adjust the hood and align it yourself? or does the hood go right back into place. Also people were saying that had to move some tube to install this. Whats the deal?? Not trying to waste that dollar.

Re: MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit

I took a look under my hood: the only tube I think you might have to move to install it would be the windshield wiper fluid tube maybe.

Good luck

Re: MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit

Moving the sound tube is snap-easy if you have a carpet knife and a couple hand wrenches. You are just relocating the mounting bracket slightly. otherwise, it goes together easily and resetting the hood takes seconds. I did the whole job in a 1/2 hour in the driveway.

The lift have just the right lift, not too strong so they wang the hood up and make you do a lat pulldown to get it back down

Do the instruction that come with it tell you how to realign the hood or did you just have to eye ball it?

Re: MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit

You can't miss; there's a nice paint line telling you exactly where it was. plus you don't have to pull the bolts all the way out to install. you're dangerously close to over-thinking this.

You should just delete the sound tube all together. The sound tube is the stupidest most useless waste of space on these new mustangs.

I've got the Redline one here for my forthcoming 2010. I got them a couple weeks ago from CJ's during teir 4th if july sale. I wasn't a big fan of he brackets to go under the hinge. I've seen the Redlines on quite a few cars. Some buddies even had them put on at Ford Carlise a couple years back on their SVO's right on the showfield. Redline was going around with a wagon and offering a deal to install.

Re: MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit

I just bolted mine back on and the hood was perfectly aligned - no problem whatsoever. Moving the sound tube was easy enough ... but I am probably getting rid of it at some point anyway - stupid idea. Easy to relocate the window washer tube with a zip-tie.

Yeah that's what I was hoping, but I was making sure to ask, had a lot of unforeseen issues with my a/bs so I want to be sure before I buy

Re: MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit

I went with the Redline one myself. It's a simpler, more elegant solution than the ones using that big hinge bracket. Still had to move the stupid sound tube--which will eventually be deleted.

Re: MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit

agreed, today, I might have tried Redline but, that wasn't on my radar when i got the car. No regrets with MMD. they work, look good and the bracket spreads the load of the strut on itself, not on the hood, which I like in an aluminum hood application, long-term.

After hearing what y'all have to say about the redline, and considering the mmd are out of stock on am, I'm going to do some more research on the redline, they may be easier to work with who knows

Makes sense. That reminds me, I have seen some posts regarding a minor issue with using hte Redline struts on fiberglass hoods--the pressure apparently bows the hood a bit. On a stock steel hood it's not a problem, but the lighter, more flexible hoods it is something to think about.

The install was super easy on the Redline struts.

Re: MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit

These 5.0 hoods are aluminum (since '05) and can be easily bent, as a result. Erring on the side of caution here when closing the hood and when choosing hood struts is a good idea

Re: MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit

Not sure about the MMD struts, but I have had a pair of MRT's no drill hood struts on my car for a year now and I think they are absolutely great- install was a snap too.
As far as the sound tube- get rid of that Mickey Mouse thing anyway...

Re: MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit

MMD and MRT are basically identical. Same strut, slight variations in the bracket. The MRT one looks a little more racey with its punched angled holes.

Re: MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit

Yep, you'd have to be a meat fist or have one of the struts jam for this to happen, though, I'd expect they've done their homework. I like the MRT bracket fine, though, as I don't have to think about that. The hood "alignment" isn't really an alignment in the body shop sense; you just have to put it back in the really obvious place it came from.

Yeah that makes a lot of sense, I have been looking at photos and it seems like the MMD gets the hood higher than the redlines do and I like the idea of a large bracket holding it all together. I see what you mean with the hood alignment that isnt a big deal at all

here's a snap of the MRTs on my car, scuse the dust. This is how far the hood goes up with them. Seems like plenty.

The MRTs are pretty much the same as the MMDs it looks like (although I think we established that earlier). I definitely think I will be going with those as soon as AM gets them back in stock

Re: MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit

After shopping around, it seems to me all the kits aside from the Redline are basically the same thing. The main difference is the shapes of the holes cut out of the bracket and hte paint color.

On the stock hood, I don't see that the Redline struts can possibly bend anything. They attach using a pre-existing hole along the side. You can see the hole in 5LHO's first picture--just above the end of the bracket.

Yeah I definitely agree, but one thing I do like about 5LHO's set up is that the struts seem to be relatively out of the way. Where the redlines seem to be.

Re: MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit

MRTs are very tucked in. It is easy to work around them in the area where they are. I agree the likelihood of bending isn't high but, it is there, when you put all the point load on that one spot on the hood, instead of spreading it out over a bracket and the hood hinge bolts.
