4.6 Vs. 5.0

This might sound a little dumb... but what is the difference between a 5.0 liter v8 and a 4.6?

I belive the current 5.0 has 4 overhead cams (belive the 4.6 had one, not sure), 4 valves and variable cam timing (4.6 had 3v and no vcti) and more displacement (5 vs 4.6). Also more hp 412 vs 300. Thats the major diffs.

Leave it to others more knowledgable in the forum to correct me.

Re: 4.6 Vs. 5.0

The 5.0 was a clean-sheet design and doesn't share any parts (so I have read) with the previous generation of engines. It's a thoroughly modern engine from the ground-up.

Yeah, it was a pretty big deal when they brought back the 5.0. I can't remember too many times when there was such a big difference between years like between 2010 and 2011.

Good write up on that Grabber. I always kinda wondered the exact differences.

Sohc means single overhead cam, only one cam per head instead of 2 (dohc) and 24 v means total number of valves, 24 in the motor, 12 per head, 3 per cylinder (2 intake and 1 exhaust

Didn't know that so many people try to pass on bad info wow...

It's not not picking, its precision, don't take it personally, just make sure that if you wanna give out info that it's correct. And I'm not being a dick, I'm just being straight forward

Rather than EVERYBODY "nitpicking, or just blindly going by what someone else wrote", Just go and get Your car "Dyno tested". That will tell you exactly what your car does, so you do not have to go by what someone else has said that his or her car does. I believe too many people do these "Ghost" Calculations on their car, by calculating what they heard their car should do, and what the sales write up of Aftermarket parts say's they do. They do these calculated numbers and they think that's what their car is supposed to be doing, and in actuality it's not doing anywhere near those numbers.

To the OP, KATO's got the best answer here. Everyone is just giving you ballpark numbers, two 5.0's off the lot will still come up with two different dynos. Don't be concerned with the size (that's NOT what she said), Other manufacturers have made more horsepower out of smaller engines. Most of us have an emotional connection to the 5.0, but my old 5.0 made ~215hp, and after a few revisions the 5.0 will come off the lot with 500hp. The real answer to your question is probably in a marketing class somewhere

As to when the nitpicking over horsepower numbers started. When the first person wrote that the Terminator had 365, that was like reading Batman wore a red costume. The terminator was an iconic car for ALL of us, and I'm sure we all fantasized about 390hp, 390lb-ft and how to get our cars there. I'm sure the first person to correct it wasn't trying to be offensive, but just say what the rest of us were thinking; batman wore a black costume.

Most of the numbers Ford releases for their cars are at the crank!.. The 365hp that they released was at the wheels!.. 390 was at the crank!.. The numbers I posted up where just generalized numbers that I've seen from Ford, and was posted just for the basic comparison between the two (4.6 and 5.0)!.. If I thought that exact numbers needed to be posted on this thread, then I would have gone down year by year, and engine by engine!..

For example, the first couple years the 2V was out it was rated at about 250hp!.. The last couple years it was rated at about 270hp!..

If the OP was asking for what each individual car does, and what not!.. Then I can understand Nit Picking generalized numbers some one posted up!.. To a certain degree!.. But that's not what he was asking!..

The 03-04 Mach1 4.6L 4v's were rated 305HP (at the crank). I think Wikipedia has the 04 at 315HP, but its incorrect, no changes internally between the 03 & 04's.

Actually termi's were underrated.. By a lot.. I remember reading over and over that they were dyno'ing at 385 right off the showroom floor.

The 96-97 2v were only 215 98 was 225 and all the new edge cars were rated at 260.
