So I'm thinking about tuning up my stang but not quite sure which tune to get. I have heard of great gains in hp and especially tq from the Bama but then there is the whole warranty and the loss of engine life deal. Then there is the ProCal which I have heard is weak but retain the warranty and eventually develops a ping or something in the engine. Thanks for the help!

I run a Brenspeed tune. Love it. Great guys over there. I'd say they're on the conservative side but I'd personally rather be a little safer than have that little extra bit of hp. A/F is dead nuts which is really what counts.

I'm confident you'll be extremely happy with either of these tuners. The great part about the Bama tuner is that it's a custom tune and not a canned tune like the PorCal. Here's a little bit about how we write our tunes:

For every Bama Tune we ask you 19 questions about your specific Mustang, including your unique mods and style of driving. This info helps us write custom tunes from the ground-up for your Mustang's mods that will give you the most horsepower that we can safely deliver. We're also constantly developing our tunes! In defense of Procal, it's not "weak". It's comparable to any other 91 octane tune out there, imho. It's particular strength lies in the boost in low rpm torque and response, reduced rpm hang, massively increased fuel mileage and the warranty. The car feels great with this tune and that's worth alot in itself. It demands real 91+ octane fuel though so, if you on the blended ****mix or can't get real high octane where you are, you might look at custom tune for your fuel.

Sounds good, do you know anything about the infamous engine pinging? Thanks for the info!

The internets exaggerates things. I'm not saying it doesn't happen. I've had it a couple times. It is classic spark knock at tip-in load on high-load shifting and it's momentary so, not damaging.

The tune itself, I believe, primarily targets the timing curve for changes. My datalogs show little change to AFR post tune so, it's not running the engine super-lean or anything but a big change in the amount of spark advance was noted by me.

I've kept the rattle away myself by only using real 91+ fuel and doing a crank sensor relearn every few months (5 minutes work with the tuner).

The hugely increased fuel mileage more than offsets the cost of having to use 91+ fuel.

I would strongly suggest a "custom Dyno" tune, if there is a good tuner shop near you and its in the budget. I've been running the Bama tune since August. I was running the race tune. It was a big improvement over stock and I feel very safe. I recently had a custom tune done by Pro Dyno in SC. It is a HUGE difference. I picked 25 RWHP and 28 RWTQ over the Bama. My car is auto and it shifts totally different now.. Not every car even stock is the same. There has been 20 to 30 RWHP differences in stock 5.0s. Another plus for Bama is they warranty the #8 cylinder.

Good, no doubt but, what if you burn #7? Looking at goodwill at that point. The FRPP warranty replaces ALL of the B to B 3/36 related to the entire powertrain and covers it all. It's right there in their documentation. If the tune causes a failure in any powertrain component, it's warrantable.

We all know how difficult it is to get any warranty work done (no matter whose it is) but, that's beside the point, the paper, at least, is as good as it can get with FRPP.

Yep, just make the decision of maximum performance vs. warranty coverage. I had over 30,000 miles with my custom tune in my 06

Agreed. My thinking is if I'm going to blow the warranty on a car I'm still paying for, it's gotta be for something more than a handful of ponies...more like a blower or big nitrous shot.

I remember one of the reasons I bought this car was because my old Mazda Speed 3 was coming out of warranty and showing signs of electrical distress. I sure didn't want that cure on my dime.

Course, I've also had the trans rebuilt on this car by Ford once now so, yay for warranty coverage. Let's hope the rest of the car holds up a touch better than the MT82 did on its first go round.

I have be thinking alot about getting my 2013 mustang gt tuned. I am for sure leaning towards the bama tune. I have sct tuner that my father bought a while ago and gave it to me. I really dont know how they work. I am not sure if it will need to be updated and i would like to see if i can purchase tunes from bama for if that is even possible.
