Engine rev safety

Does anyone know if the new 5.0s have any safety measures in place to keep you from blowing or damaging the engine around redline? I know there is a rev limiter but not sure if that is it. The reason I ask was when I started drag racing last year I tried to finish the 1/4 mile in 3rd (just experimenting) and the engine just completely cut power and I just rolled across the finish line. Was that the rev limiter doing its job? Is it possible to damage the engine by redlining? Also, when tuning I read some folks mess with the rev limiter. Isn't that dangerous? What are acceptable rmps for the coyote? Thanks for any input.

That was the rev limiter. Leave changing the engine parameters to the professionals.

its the cut off is for saftey, but the sound of someone bouncing off of it is horrible to me.

Also max power != max rpm allowed (not always)

if I remember right our cars come factory redline of 7K but a hard redline of 8k. I know once you add like the Boss Mani you will need to go past 7 to make it worthwhile. Mines been too 7.3k on the dyno before.

It's better to be slightly out of the power band if you are able to stay in a lower gear for longer, far more leverage that way
