Noob at Tuning

My car is bone stock, I have never messed with a tuner, nor do I know what exactly they are used for. Is it worth getting one and tuning a stock GT? I plan on doing more engine mods next year, probably starting with exhaust. Thanks for the help.

It depends on what your goals are ... and what your personal preference is.

A tune will definitely wake your car up and provide more HP and Torque.

Just our tune you would see numbers around 17-20 HP at the wheels. Cold air and tune is closer to 30+.

Not all tunes are created equal so do your homework and decide which one is best for you.

We have been tuning for many years and we have had 0 issues with warranty claims and when our tune and CAI have been directly installed on a consumers car.

Send me an email if I can tell you more about tuning at tim @ steeda.com

Best Regards,

TJ

Hand held tuners are pretty simple to use. It's just a plug in and follow the directions type of deal. You won't need a tune for the exhaust if you are just going to do axle backs but like said above a tune will really wake your car up. American Muscle has a free tunes for life program when you buy a tuner so anytime you install something that needs a tune you can just request a new via email. Do your research, look around and find the tune that suits you best.

Ok, I'll do some research. How much does a good tuner go for?

I have to throw my vote at American Muscle/Bama tuning. Free tunes for life plus you get tune revisions beyond fast. Some people have gotten them same day when ordered early in the morning and others like me I have ordered them in the evening and gotten them by 11a.m. the next morning.

there customer support is second to none.

I took about 6 month to tune my car and today I install a tune from Bama and wow wow wow wow, it feel like a different car much much faster and responds way better. Definably a must have in a 5.0.

English is my forth language after Italian, Spanish and French. Still mess up on some words in English.

People mistakenly type "alot" a lot. Sorry, I'm easily amused, so please don't take it personal!

"Forth" is a direction, not a number. Still, four languages (at any skill level) is pretty darn impressive! Guess missing a word here and there is going to happen.

Okay, I'm switching my grammar jacka** mode off. Back to the topic at hand. I am also a total noob. I'm curious what effect installing a custom tune will have on my warranty. Is one tuner manufacturer or another preferred when it comes to preserving the factory warranty? It's not a deal-breaker for me, I'm just curious if I will have more liability when it comes to any repairs.

For that matter, is it possible to screw up a tune so bad that you can break something?

Your warranty is void with any tune. Only exception is the FRPP procal tuner will get you an FRPP supplemented warranty.

Pro cal tune sucks and is terrrrrribly conservative.

That said, some dealers won't care. Some will. If actual Ford has to be brought in on the repair they will care. If you tune it is safest to assume your warranty is gone.

Yes you can screw items up with a tune ... do a search on the forums and you can see issues that can occur when a tune is written poorly.

That is why you have to do your homework and decide on a tune that is best for you.
