Big Mistake!

So I recently installed the MMD prepainted tail light trim for my 2013 GT. I love the way it looks but after installing it according to the directions and making sure they were PERFECTLY aligned they made my rear decklid panel CRACK! The decklid panel started hitting the top of the tail light trim on both sides when I closed the trunk. Yesterday the left tip of the deck lid panel broke off so I super glued it and used some touchup paint on the tail light trim. Covered the dings with elec tape. Yes Yes it looks like crap!

So now I'm looking for a new decklid panel. I found it on fordparts.com for 225.00. (Part # 42528) But after researching other websites they list the 2011-2012 decklid panels that are flat black with the horizontal lines.

Does anyone know the correct part number for the Gloss black decklid panel with the GT faux gas cap that come stock on the 2013s?

I emailed AM I hope they can refund my money for the tail light trim because I have to buy a new decklid panel and I don't even wana think about replacing the tail lights yet as I think they are about 900.00 each! The tail light trim is held on by 3m tape and there is no way to get underneath to take them off. I'm going to have to do some cutting/modding to keep from cracking another decklid panel.

I know all cars have a slightly different fit and finish but I installed it perfectly according to the supplied instructions but this product damaged my Stang.

Any suggestions? Other than "the 2013 tail lights are awesome already and I shouldn't have added aftermarket tail light trim". Thanks!

I respectfully disagree with OzzyLiriano- I like the way those parts look. I was literally on my way to the AM site to order those trim pieces. I stopped in here just to see what was up on the forums when I saw this post. I'm sorry to hear about your problems 2013fiveO. But I'm so glad you posted about this! You just saved me some money and a big headache. Wish I could help with the p/n for the deck lid cover.

I was looking at those trim pieces as well as a new decklid for our 2013. I could not find a part number through the Ford website. I think it will take a phone call to Ford parts department to find the right part number. I'm guessing it's gonna be a couple bills for the decklid.

Yeah I emailed a couple dealers to quote a new dl panel. But it's Sunday and I probably won't get a reply for a while. I'm U.S. Army stationed in Germany and I'll have to wait until tomorrow afternoon to call around because of the time difference.

Now I'm not claiming this is a bad product. I'm sure it had hours of testing prior to marketing and production.

I watched the reviews on AM for a couple of weeks before I bought the tail light trim and it had great reviews. I installed this product about a week ago and opening and closing the trunk wasn't an issue until about 2 days ago when I noticed my deck lid cracked and it was hitting the trim. I baby my stang and never slam the trunk.

However there are so many variables involved as to why this may have happened. My installation was not one of them as I probably took 50 measurements because I'm a neat freak. But like I said every Mustang has small variations in "fit and finish". This is not a 1/4 million dollar hand made sports car. I even checked the weather strip on the trunk to make sure it wasn't moved or worn out. (Even though it's a 2013 and I've only had the car 7 months).

All I can do is wait to hear from American Muscle to see if I'm the first to have this issue and how they are going to handle it. Like I stated in my email to them I am a VERY loyal AM customer and have purchased over $5000.00 in parts from them. Their customer service has never let me down.

Worst case is I fork out the couple bills to get a new dl panel and use my Dremel tool to cut out the part of the trim that the dl panel is hitting and paint the area.

But it does suck though because I baby my Stang and every time I look at the decklid panel I... I... well you know

Thanks for your reply. These tail light trim look awesome! And I'm sure they tested them and my issue may be an isolated incident. Even though my Mustang is only a couple moths old. I want your Mustang BTW!

Ha ha, thanks! Keep us posted on how AM handles this. I'm still interested in those trim pieces. But now I'll know to do a trial fit with some putty or something first. I can make sure there is plenty of clearance with the trunk closed.

I hear a hair dryer may loosen that 3m tape. But I have no idea what effect it might have on your paint.

As an aside, since you're stationed in Germany, does that mean you get to take your car out on the Autobahn? If so, I'm super jealous. You going to ship your car home when your deployment ends?

2013fiveO,

Wow, I've never seen or suspected this issue before. I'm very sorry this happened!

Could you take another photo of the fitment with the trunk closed, I want to see the fitment as whole. I'm baffled how this even happened to begin with, since I see you've thoroughly followed the instructions. We haven't had any other issues with these tail light trims to date. It makes me think your deck lid panel has extra material?

Regardless, I feel terrible that your deck lid cracked. I'd be happy to set you up with a store credit refund, to help clear the air. Please let me know if that works for you and if there's anything else I can do!

Shane

Shane, Thanks. I have been in contact via email with ALEX | CS EMAIL SPECIALIST and I replied but haven't heard back yet? And I emailed more pics showing the whole fit. Can you find out what the status is or have them contact me so we can go further. I have one update for Alex. Thanks!

2013fiveO,

Thanks for the new pictures! I'm still trying to figure how the deck lid panel corner snapped with the small gap there is between the two. Maybe, it's just a shadow from the picture. It's difficult to see, but I'll take your word for it.

Anyways, I talked with Alex since you've been emailing him. He's on the ball this morning and has you all setup with a bank credit to cover the cost of a new factory deck lid panel! You should have an email from him now with more details.

Again, I'm really sorry about this whole situation! I'm glad Alex was able to work a solution out with you. Please let me know if there's anything else you need!

Shane

Shane, thanks.

I did receive the email from Alex and thank you for helping me fix this problem. I know this was a sticky situation for all concerned but as always, American Muscle met my expectations.

AM will still get my hard earned green backs for all my Mustang needs.

I am baffled by this too. Not sure why my deck lid panel hits the trim. You have to line up the trim evenly with the red outline of the lights. If I installed the trim any lower it would look off center and the gap around the top near the trunk and the bottom over the bumper would be uneven.

I can speculate all day on what caused it but all I know is that it caused problems for me. I do hope this doesn't happen to anyone else. And I'm sure AM will continue to evaluate this. There is a first for everything.

I will do some cutting and painting of the trim so my new decklid panel doesn't hit it. But the bright side is that I get to play with my Dremel tool!

BTW today I received my Diablosport tuner and MT drag radials on the black Bullit rims! The packaging was perfect and the rims look great. Can't wait to hit the track running the 93 Race tune!

Thanks again and have a great day.

This was a little bit of a tricky situation, but I knew it could be solved. I'm glad you're happy with the solution and I appreciate your loyalty and support!

Enjoy the new Bullitt Wheels and Bama Race tune, too. Let me know how you do at the track when the time comes!

OK, just checked them out on the AM site in black and I'm sold. Little concerned about the cracking situation you had but sounds like AM is doing the right thing by you. I'll check with them up front before I order but I'm sold.

Thanks. I think they look great. Like AM said this is the first of probably hundreds (I'm not sure how many they have sold) that this has happened to. So apparently it's an isolated incident.

I'll bet if you loosen the 2 screws that hold the decklid you might be able to adjust it just slightly enough so that it doesn't interfere with the tail light covers.

I tried it. Didn't help. It moves a little but there are clips underneath holding it in place. Thanks.

Uh Oh? Did this happen to you too?

Part # DR3Z63423A42CA

The official fordparts.com website and a dealership I called list it at $360.00

But I got it from tousleyfordparts.com for $272.33 shipped.

I just got it in the mail yesterday. Too bad my Mustang is at the dealership because the Diablosport Intune messed up my pcm and they are ordering another one from the states that won't be here until next week.

Talk about bad luck. This decklid issue a week ago and now the ds Intune ruined my car.

Damn, sorry to hear. Man, if you didn't have bad luck, you'd have no luck at all!

lol yeah, I think I'm going to take a break from modding for a while. It has just caused waaaaay too much stress recently. If the dealership gets my Mustang up and running and it doesn't cost me too much I think I'll just enjoy it the way it is for a while. Until I get to track this summer anyway.

This thread came at a good time for me, as my wife ordered these tail light trim pieces for my birthday. I have the black Ford center deck panel, and from your pics, it appears you have a different manufacturers center deck lid cover (glossy). After checking several times using some blue tape to hold and align the tail light pieces in place and closing the deck lid, I had no issues with these coming close to the deck lid. There is plenty of space between them (taillight trim pieces) and the decklid center piece.

Thanks for posting, as it certainly made me check and double check the fitment!

Yeah I also closed the trunk to make sure it looked centered before I stuck them on and installed them with the trunk closed. I think it has to do with the play the trunk has when sitting on the weather strip. When you close the truck it comes down a little further before it springs back up into closed position. Just be careful.
