Gear or tire swap

I'm hitting the drag strip this year with my 2011 mustang gt with 3:31 manual. I was thinking about putting 17" tires in the rear that are shorter or changing gears. I'm trying to run faster than 12.9 in 1/4. If I did change gears I would prob put 3:55 since it is my daily driver.

3.31 to 3.55 won't do much. 3.73 isn't bad at all for a daily driver.

Yeah thats not much of an increase. I would go with 3.73s or get you a lightweight wheel set up. Drag lites or something

I'm probably the only person on this fourm that will agree with your choice of gear. The car needs just a little more gear to get you in the power band down low.

What tires do you have that you lose traction. I test drove a mustang with 3:73 and did not like it because first gear was two low. If I did put 3:73's on and it was cold would I have to worry about putting it sideways at the drag strip with the traction control off?

I have 3.73 gears and summer tires with suspension work done and thought she fights to hold the ground a little when it is cold I've never lost control of her and that is with the TC off. We are talking upper 30s. Now if it is 55+ she grips like a champ through every gear.

3.73 are perfect gears. 3.55 isn't enough of a change haha.

+1 my car is my daily driver as well, and I love the 3.73s. I do spin quite a bit though but thats mainly due to the sstock suspension. Hoping that changes soon with my recent purchases.

3.73 gears, stock PZeroes and just had a susp change to frpp FR3 handling kit with adjustable shocks and dampers. I used to lose the rear in cold weather but now it's too warm to see how suspension change will help. It can be scary when u need to pull out quick to merge or beat the car coming from your left. A mustang looks fast, then seems to just sit after pulling into traffic (wheel spin!)

I would change tires over gears, if you get a 26" slick with the 3.31 gears if will keep you in 4th gear through the 1/4, not to mention slicks will cut times down much better than gears. I would do gears also but if its one or the other do tires.

Also keep in mind that if you do change to 26" slick then change to 3.73's you will need to upgrade to a 28" slick to stay in 4th.

And if you go FI you will want those 3.31's back... It's give and take really

Really is best advice on here. I bought mine with 373s and it was good, no complaints. Now with FI it's a highway car, not a bad thing, but the gears go too fast down low and I wish I had 331s now. I'd do the tire option especially if boost is a possibility down the road.

I have 4.10's and its a d/d, lots of suspension work and in my op 4.10's are fun as hell, you never lose on the line and once you hit third or forth your in the power band and its a beast...but I like my cars set up that way...just my op

Do tires first , then gears if its necessary . I did 12.90 in Oklahoma with an Auto & 3:15 gears , I do have Tuner. Borlas, Drag Radials 275x 18's and the stuck good when properly heated
