Fuel avg mpg vs miles to empty

I always assed that the number of mile to empty is based on the average mpg. Is this not correct? These numbers are a bit off... Can someone explain this?

I thought that too. Were you driving harder than usual when you were comparing?

i tend to think it infact based on mpg. When i filled up after i averaged ~21 mpg going up to my school all high way driving it said 300+ (dont remember the exact number) miles till empty. When i fill up with my normal city driving its around 280 or so miles till empty. This leads me to believe it is based on mpg.

It's based on how your driving the car at the time I think. I've had it say one #, then hit cruise and it go up.

Does the miles left till empty divided by the avg mpg match how many gallons you have left? (Approximate)

Normal driving. Been watching it for three or four weeks since the tune. Went from 16.9 mpgs to staying around 12.5 the day the tune went on.

My low fuel light used turn on when the needle is just about on the quarter tank line. Does come on till 1/8 tank now. End up usually putting between 11 and 12.5 gallons of gas when filling up.

Reset the trip every fill up. Always around 160 miles per fill up so the avg seems to be right just not the miles left. Anyway to reset that?
