To the best of my knowledge, there is none in any state. NHTSA (National Highway Transportation Safety Administration) sets the law federally. You'll have no leg to stand on if you get stopped and issued a ticket.

It is 100% illegal to put any tint on your tail lights. I just used VHT on mine, and then polished them down to a good darkness... Also made them really glossy. You can clearly see my brake lights any time of day. But that is still a risk i am taking.

Dude, SC has the least amount of rules for vehicles. You can do pretty much anything you want...

As long as the people can see your brake lights through the tint from a reasonable distance you should be fine

The problem with most tailight tinting is, when the bright sunlight shines directly on the back of the car, sometimes brake light illumination is near impossible to see.

I did mine with vht night shades the right wan an am more than pleased with how it looks/ how bright my lights still are. I did 2 coats with 4 coats of clear coat and wet sanded it with 3000 grit at the end an polish/ compounded it. It's smooth as glass. I highly recommend vht nightshades. 3 coats is as legally dark with it, I did 2 and my lights look black at night but during the day there dark dark red and my brake lights are always visble. The pic with the tape on the lights is before sanding them btw.
