Open filter??

So a friend of mine has a paxton on his 5.0 without a filter just a mesh on the blower without the tube. Can this be bad? It does make the engine look so clean. Cons and pros please
Thank!

Dust does not combust. Not my motor being hurt.

I'd have to see it but dust particles getting in that engine can't be a good thing :/

Run a filter. Your rings will thank you.

I've seen this a lot (used to be big in the tuner crowd with my old SRT4). Not running a filter is usually a bad idea, but the thought process was that between the impeller and intercooler, most of the particles would be caught before they ever got into the combustion chamber. I'm not sure if I agreed with that logic, and I ran a filter....but it's not uncommon to see forced induction systems without it.

Screen/no filter on centris is worth about a pound in boost, give or take.
Wouldn't do it daily, but for track purposes they should be fine with screen.

Ever seen a few pieces of gravel go into the impeller? I had to figure out why a motor wasn't making any power...found out it had 1# of boost. Pulled the intake tube where there was no air filter, and gravel/small rocks had removed every fin off of the impeller, one small one was wedged in the housing just outside the impeller. The motor ate all the fins and whatever else made its way inside.

For the track, I'd run at least a screen. On the road, a filter.
