Shift LIght

I want to add a shift light to my GT. I'd like to have one that displays one color at an rpm for good mpg, and then another color at around 5k for those times when mpg just doesn't matter anymore. Or perhaps two shift lights.

I don't want to add a tach. Just a light. Has anyone done this and what worked for you?

I've seen the single color lights at AM. I was hoping that someone had tried few and had figured out which was best.

You can do what your wanting to do with one light. Thing is you'll have to reprogram it when you go to the track.

I've done this on a few cars and bikes. I just use a small bullet LED shift light like this one, which I've used in multiple applications:

Shiftlight

You would need to program it for both uses and having a shift light going off under conditions other than WOT is ricer. You have a mileage gauge in your information panel in the stock gauges, scroll through and you'll see a bar graph thingy, drive so as few bars show as possible and you'll be in the mileage zone.

I'll just go with two single lights. To keep it as non-ricer as possible, the mileage shift light is going to go in the vent with the high rpm light sitting up on top of the dash or on the A-pillar.

It's not revs on this car that makes for efficiency, it's road speed and throttle position. 2 lights not ricey, rly?

Engine RPM has a lot of impact on mpg. Rotating mass requires exponentially more power to spin as rpms increase. Car speed cannot be practically changed since 45 mph is 45 mph and driving 20 mph in a 45 zone is just not feasible. Throttle position affects mpg when you are putting more gas in than the car needs. To maximize mileage, you accellerate slow, brake easy, and keep the rpms low.

And then when its time to dust some loser in a Ricer, you use all that gas you've been saving all day and make use of that second shift light!

I don't think two lights are ricey. Plasti-dip is ricey. Nav screens in hot rods is ricey. Smoked taillight covers are ricey. Fake hood scoops are ricey. People do a lot of ricey stuff here, but its their car.

Ok so, close the textbook and look at how this engine/car works in the real world and you'll see that the bigger impact on mileage is from the two things I mentioned. We're not talking running in first gear at 5000 rpm here, we're talking daily operation, putting around. What's actually quite wasteful is the energy required to accelerate the mass, not the energy needed to maintain a steady state rpm, that energy needed is directly connected to your right foot and to road speed increasing. The miracle of gearing makes accelerating the mass easier.

This is 100% closed-loop car and it is always trimming in real time for max efficiency. You can control for throttle position totally and for road speed quite a lot. The difference between a highway run on this car at 70 mph and 60 mph is easily 5+ mpg lost at the higher speed. I've measured this in the real world repeatedly, under many environmental conditions.

I never close the textbook. I'm an engineer. The "miracle of gearing" is what I'm talking about. Keep the rpms low so you save energy while accelerating the mass.

My friend had a raptor light back on his 03 cobra, pretty small and nice. You do know your tach is already a shift light right?

Ever rev your car to redline? The whole tach turns red when you do. Just like your fuel gauge turns red if it gets very low. Its kinda one of those features not many people talk about I guess. There's videos of it on YouTube too. Nothing you need to do to make it work, it just does it.

That might require the "ambient lighting" option. I got the base model 2014 GT. I hit the rev limiter in 2nd yesterday and didn't see any red flashes.

Ah ok, I think you're right, it may only be on the premium trim. In that case, the raptor light is a pretty nice light.

Yeah definitely on just the premiums. My '14 base doesn't have one either.
