Burnout mode?

Ford has stated that they would have a feature never before offered on production cars. The pundits have decided it might be a line lock to allow the front wheels to be locked for a burnout mode, making the tire manufacturers ecstatic, and environmentalists faint.

It's rumored that the 2015 BMW M3/M4 will announce a similar feature...

Why can't people just get the revs up and dump the clutch? Or if it's an auto, just floor it and find the right brake pressure.

The idea is to be able to do demonstration burnouts more safely. I have been in a lot of parade cruises where the cars are doing burnouts to please the crowd. With a line lock, it would be a lot safer to do public burnouts.

So install a line lock, don't give it an electronic nanny to do a burnout.

Manufacturers keep trying to add features that will give them an edge over the competition. It gets harder each year, and gimmicks like this are going to attract some. A line lock can be installed, but may have consequences with warranties and insurance.

Make a line lock available from the factory, let the world know what they're about.

I would like to see what the lawyers do with this one...some idiot locks the fron wheels, does a burnout, looses control and hits a pedestrian.

Then a lawsuit starts to see who is to blame.

It's an electronic nanny like launch control, except for burnouts, not a real line lock.

Ford has not announced anything, this is still conjecture, so how would you know what it is?

It seams logical to me that a burnout control would be part of the launch control package. The last thing you want to do at the starting line is prematurely trip the stage lights when using launch control.

Because spinning the wheels with brake pressure causes the rear brakes to get very hot and prematurely wears out. From the rumor mill... Ford is going to offer a SRA for the drag racing folks so if that is the case and Ford make a drag-pack then line lock will need to be part of that option.
