OK OP, this may be a bit anal, but that instrument is called a tachometer and not an RPM gauge. Similarly the other large device is a speedometer as opposed to a miles-per-hour gauge. HTH

The red area is where the needle needs to be at all times while driving to prevent catastrophic results

What does it mean when the needle is on E and the car won't start? Does e stand for Engine? This means I need a supercharger right?

Almost - it means "expedite" - to the next nearest Mustang owner for title transfer.

One other cool option I found recently on these cars is the little yellow car with curvy lines behind it indicator. What's neat about it is, if you live, say, out in the Midwest where there are no curvy roads, you can simulate curvy roads by pushing this button and depressing the gas pedal to the floor from a dead stop.

A great choice for a first standard transmission automobile. I learned to drive on my dad's old 1963 AMC Rambler with a one barrel carburetor and three speed shifter on the steering column.

at first i thought it was going to be about how the tachometer flashes red when getting to redline while floored.

On our Dodge Nitro there is no gawdy red indicator light on tach. I Guess I would have known if the numbers were red or something to that extent. I didn't associate the bright red indicator with the tach.

that dodge has the red lines where redline begins, every manufacturer has their own way of showing it, but its pretty common sense to figure it out...ijs
