Steeda Tune concern

I just got Steeda LCA's, CAI, and tune. After putting everything on, I went ahead and tried to tune the car. Plugged in the tuner, went to 'Custom Tune' and realized that all I had was 93 octane and 87 available. I specifically asked for 91 octane tune from them when I ordered. No big deal, I'll put the 87 on and call and get it switched in the meantime. "Unlock ECM failed" was the problem I got after that. Next step, go to the 'Strategy Tune' section and select 5.0 mustang and begin tuning, and that worked.

I did read the instructions while I did this and also had a friend with me who had tuned a mustang before. After installing the generic '5.0' tune I turned the car on and a horrible knocking noise came from the engine. Turn the car off, check the tuner again and realize that the generic '5.0' tune in the Strategy Tune section is for everything being stock. I went through the settings and changed everything to my car's mods and fired her up and everything went smooth after that.

3 questions...
Is this 'generic' tune doing me basically no good as far as performance gains?
Is there something I'm doing wrong within the 'Custom Tune' section that I should be able to use?
WTF is going on with the octane settings?

Yes the canned SCT tunes do little for performance except raise the timing to a dangerously high level.

I think the problem is more with the tuner and not the tunes Steeda loaded on it. Yes it can be frustrating. I would contact SCT to help in getting the tunes loaded and Steeda as well to email you the 91 octane tune.

they do alot for performance actually, but at the cost of possibly a broken #8 piston, good practice to stay away from the strategy tunes.

Is there some way that I need to marry the SCT Tuner to the car? I thought I should be able to just plug the tuner in and select a custom tune but that wasn't the case. Does it sound like an issue with my tuner that I can perform a strategy tune and not a custom one?

I guess you and I have different opinions on performance then.

As soon as you down load a tune, any tube, your car is now married to the tuner. Maybe try putting a battery tender on the car and make sure all accessories are off and then try it again.

ran into an older gentleman few years ago, 2011 A6 SCT strategy tune only 11.90's all day long, of course the car ate a #8 piston within the next year as I saw him again at the track in a different car, nah that's not good performance at all, but as I said........at a cost

Right now I'm able to program a strategy tune but not a custom tune, I get error code 1019. Sent an email to SCT tonight and plan on calling them tomorrow. I've read things about the key not being in the correct spot, but if that was the case I wouldn't expect to be able to install the strategy tune. I would like to avoid my #8 cylinder for going down

Hmm, I just loaded my Steeda tune the other day for the first time with no problem. You've contacted Steeda also correct?

Well I contacted them today to get the correct tune because it didn't come with a 91 tune like I requested. I'm kind of now wondering if they didn't program my tuner at all because none of the "custom" ones work and it's because my ECM is locked out which makes me think they didn't program the tuner right. I also found out that the "strategy tune" is a pre programmed tune from SCT which furthers my suspicion that Steeda screwed up. Were you able to just go to custom tune and fire it right up?

You're talking about the sct tunes not the steeda tunes giving performance or am I reading this wrong?

Correct. I was referring to the SCT tunes.

Yep. I plugged the tuner in, selected the Steeda tune, turned my key to the on position and it did it's thing. I think I may need to do some data logging though. The car will sometimes stutter on hard acceleration.

Yep - the problem lies within the generic strategy tune provided by SCT. Steeda is of no concern in this particular situation.

I haven't had any issues at all since I've loaded my Steeda tune, everything is working completely fine, and I'm loving it. I do plan to datalog just for some peace of mind.

The main problem I'm having is that I can download the strategy tune, but not a custom tune. Steeda is sending me new tunes today (hopefully) but I don't have confidence that will fix my problem. I wasn't able to download the 2 custom tunes before, so I don't see how a different tune file will make any difference in that. Does OBDII connector snap in when you plug it in? Do you have to push it in pretty hard? So far I've just plugged it in until the tuner comes on and then call it good.

Well if you plug it in and it turns on then you're good to go.

So when i'm talking to the Steeda rep and and i explain my problem and he says it's probably not plugged in all the way, that's just not true. If i can download the strategy tune and not the custom tune, something else is going on.

Alright, got the problem resolved. Steeda sent me a new tune and confirmed my thought that the previous 'Custom Tunes' that were on my tuner were not for my vehicle. The new one they sent me worked great and I can tell that the car is more responsive.

Great. Huh, I had that same error one time and I just unplugged and plugged back in and was able to tune without any problems.
