CAI Question

Just recently bought a 2012 mustang 5.0 and was wondering if it is worth it to spend the money on an aftermarket CAI or should I just get a K&N drop in filter for the factory air box. I will also be getting a tuner soon so how much would it benefit to spend the extra money on a CAI?

Congrats on the car! I recently put a cold air intake and tune combo on my 2011 GT and definitely notice a difference in performance. I did both at once so I can't give you an exact answer to your question, but I would highly recommend a tune. Other than that the sound alone from the cai has made driving more enjoyable.

From other peoples opinions and responses I would say just a tune would be fine though. An aftermarket cai hasn't been known to add much power, if any, on these engines. Let us know what you decide!

Most agree that you won't see much gains from just a CAI. Guys see a good bump in power when they do an intake along with a tune...and most of the gains from that are the tune.

As for how much you'd gain by sticking with the stock airbox and an aftermarket tune...well...depends on the tune. There has been a number of threads about this already, do a quick search and see if you can find what you need.

Not sure why Rapinator posted that, Here's the data I have a link to - K&N was not worse or better. Just the same as stock when Brenspeed tested it.

Someone on SVT Performance did a test with the K&N and lost power.

CAI Question

Thanks for all of the feedback. If I get a CAI that is tune required will it void my warranty if something happens and I take it in without removing the CAI or the tune?

Pretty much yep. You can kiss your drivetrain warranty good bye.

Just because you install an aftermarket part ... including a CAI & a Tune ... It will not automatically void your warranty.

Read the Magnusson - Moss Warranty Act for full information.

But does support the fact of not using a drop in to gain power by itself.

If you're gunna go for one or the other, I'd have to say the tuner, but if it where my car, I'd just do both and call it a day. I wouldn't replace just the filter for the stock air box though...if you're gunna spend the money you might as well just get the entire CAI.
In the end it's up to you though man. But the tuner will def net you more HP or just the CAI
