For those with MT-82 cold shifting issues

Hey everyone,

Just took my 2011 GT into a Ford dealership today and had them exercise TSB 11-11-1. I'm going to pick my car up in a few hours and will report back to let you know if the new fluid (QDC) helps with cold shifting or not. I live in Minnesota and it's actually snowing right now so it's definitely cold enough to affect the transmission.

Hmm what do you mean cold shifting issues? I am in CT and even though it is not suppose to snow this time of year it did last night. It was 27 at my place I didn't notice anything off. But I just did pick up my new car about 2 weeks ago.

I think it's with 2011 and 2012 mustangs with the MT-82. The factory fluid in them is too thick so he synchros grind when shifting at cold temps. What year do you have?

Glad you found a good one!

As far as my QDC fluid that went in yesterday, it didn't help at all. Still nibbling into 2nd and 3rd and even 4th sometimes (while the car is cold). Going to have to call the regional customer service person back and see what they will do for me...

If the nibbling goes away warm, it isn't really likely an issue. Getting a shifter bracket, slowing down shift speed cold and leading the gas a little on the upshift when cold my remedy the situation. QDC was better, in my case but, it only went in after Ford rebuilt my trans for other problems.

I do have a MGW shifter which includes bracket. It's pathetic that to avoid the problem I have to pull the shifter to the synchro mesh point and wait for them to mesh (.5 - 1 second pause) and then go the rest of the way into gear. When doing that I can feel them pulsing lightly because they are still spinning up...if this TSB did put the 'recommended' fluid in and the car still does this, I would say there is a bigger problem and they need to investigate it, especially since it's under warranty.

This actually isn't that unusual on gearboxes across multiple platforms, particularly in high power applications. GT500 guys get some of this on their Tremec boxes, too, etc. If it goes away when warm, there probably isn't an answer for you that you want to hear.

Did they put the XL18 additive in too? That's supposed to help a lot.

I had my dealership change mine out quite awhile back after someone brought it up on here.. Still shifts like sh*t. Was maybe a lil better for a day or two. But it doesn't really matter how cold it is on mine. I hopped in another 5.0 once and it was like a hot knife through butter. So smooth.. Mine just sitting still doesn't shift between gears worth a damn.. Crunches into gear.

How old is what?

I would be interested in driving another 2011 5.0 to see the difference for myself actually. My shifting issues mostly go away when warmed up, but even going to 4th every once in awhile it is a little crunchy. I sent ford an email and explained that my problems didn't go away after the tsb install and they are going to have a customer service rep contact me. I just want them to look at it more closely, not necessarily asking for a new tranny
