I have been thinking about getting a pair of 40 series flowmasters. I don't think they are real loud. Not sure about the drone though. I have a local shop that will install them for $180

I have the flowmaster American thunders and they sound great (axle backs) but they do drone going up a mountain at 2000 rpm with a load. Everyone always says how good it sounds though. Not loud, just low grumble mean.

I have the Bassani Axle backs and they have a deep throaty sound. I get many compliments.

If later you plan on long tube headers without CATs, I've heard good things about the GT-500 axle backs.

I'm thinking to get the Roush but I've read that driving normally or at idle there is not much difference than stock. You only hear the difference when you rev or accelerate. I still haven't decide between Magnaflow competition or Roush.

Well at cold start its a day and night difference from stock to Roush; at idle yes its not that distinctly different but it is; and yes when you rev and accelerate the car sounds amazing!!! Im not familiar to much with Magnaflow but the other one that I was wanting was the Flowmaster Outlaw. Good luck with your decision!

Very true what your saying but a GT with 420 hp not fast? It sounds like you do a lot of track racing, most people with a Stang are not drag racing and just want exactly that, A LOUD STANG!

I'm not trying to squeeze ever hp from the car lol. 420 is more than enough. I drive a Camry during the week and the stang on weekends so it's hard for me to get used to 420. Most people who drive it daily eventually get used to 420 hp and want more. I think axle backs are more than enough to get that muscle car sound that we all want.

Sometimes, I'd bet people would lose horribly if all they had was their ears to differentiate a muffler test. Kinda like a blind taste test of vodka.

My Borla axle back touring pipes give a nice deep rumble, no drone and aren't obnoxiously loud, but noticeably louder than stock.

A have the gt 500's. Volume is quite reasonable and has a sweet tone. I did remove the resonators also. Doesn't sound beastly, just what the mustang really should have sounded like from the factory.

I've got the quad tip GT500s and they are reasonable at low throttle but get real mean when you get on it. I leave early in the morning in my neighborhood and noise was a concern but these are fine.

Outlaws chiming in. I like em, they're growly and rumbly, and they do not rasp. The online videos really don't do them justice...i think most guys filming them have equipment that doesn't pick up the low sound range of these.

They do drone around 2k, and you probably will wake your neighbors when leaving in the morning.

Remove the cats and they sound like this . That's with a JBA H pipe and a cam tune.

edit, that isn't my car so props to the video owner. Mine will be similar sometime later this summer.

Suggestion if you have sync, go listen to exhaust videos on YouTube while your sitting in your car with the stereo up.

Sounds better than you phone or home computer.
