Gas tank

Is it normal that when my car is at 1/4 of a tank left my low gas light comes on and says I have 50 miles left.

No, not really, however, how bad are you floggin' the car? If the computer says you only are getting 7mpg your 50 miles left warning would come on about just lower than 1/2 a tank!

What is the MPG you are getting. 1/4 of a tank is about 4 gals, so if your only getting 12mpg, then 1/4 of a tank would be spot on for a 50 mile low fuel warning

what do you get when you reset the MPH counter in the LCD screen when on the hiway? What speed?

You should get your 50 mile warning based on that at 2.9 gals left, or about 3/16 of a tank; 4/16s being 1/4 tank lever, starting to sound about right ???

The other day I got that light at a quarter if a tank and I ran all the way down to where it said "0miles till e" I did this only because it appeared on the analog that it was still above the line, I drove like 5 more miles and then went to a gas station, I filled up and only put 14.2 gallons in wtf??

How many cars have you had? They all have a few gallon reserve beyond what they say is empty to keep you safe from yourself!

Back in the 70s we would say, sorry I am on Triple EEE, I need some gas money if you want a ride. That is because the gauges back then went below Empty a few clicks until you were stuck on the road walkin'

Mine usually comes on just under 1/4 tank. How close to 1/4 tank it comes on really depends on how I drove the car on that tank, city or highway.

My light comes on with around 1/8th indicated on the gauge. My fill ups are usually 13.5gallons, so I guess mine is just about spot on (1/8th of a 16 gallon tank being 2 gallons left...avg 23mpg, so ~50miles left is 2.5 gallons in reserve. 13.5 +2.5 = 16 gallons)

I'm getting between 17-18 mpg, live in NYC, even though I do drive mostly on the city highways, I wouldn't call it "highway" driving with all the traffic.

Just filled my tank up yesterday, my light came on just below 1/4, filled it up with 12.5 gallons with the gauge saying 44 mile to empty. My average fuel economy on the gauge was reading 17.8 mpg. So it means I should have had about 3.5 gallons in the tank for only 44 miles, that is pretty crappy mileage. Do you guys think maybe it doesn't count one gallon as a backup in case you do hit 0 or E?

Yes, there is more Gas left when the computer hits zero, but don't ever count on it or it will be the day you regret.

One day coming back from Wisconsin in my Pickup pulling a trailer I chose not to get gas in Indiana cause their prices on the turnpike are 40 cents more then it should be. I had just enough to make the OHIO line on route 49/20 that had two gas stations I had used before. With 10 miles showing on the trucks computer, we got off at 49 and the stations had been closed down out of business

The truck gets like 9mpg on the Turnpike pulling the trailer. We drove really really careful on route 20 back to Angola, In to get gas. It has like a 26.5 tank and the full-up put in 26 gallons

Stangs have a saddle type tank that is really split in two....it leaves 1-2 gallon per side making the useable gallonage at 13-14 out of 16.

Resetting the average MPG doesn't seem to change the overal miles to 0 gauge. That changes over time based on your average MPG rating. Only way I know of resetting it is disconnecting the negative battery terminal. I had upgraded my CAI and it calls for disconnecting the battery. When I finished I noticed my miles to 0 was far higher than it usually was.

On the 2011-14 it only remember the last 500 miles for the estimate. On my 12 3.7 I get the light at 2.5 gallons left.

31,304.2 said 50 to E
31,358.7 said 0 to E
31,395.9 at fill up

And I only put in 15.48x gallons.

Arc, I've read some of your mpg threads so I know you are way off to the left side of the bell curve.

Lol, very true! (That tank was 41.9399 mpg) But, the 2.5 gallons should stay the same. My distances will just be a little off to the average or lead footed. I couldn't speak to other years, though.

I didn't see this was in the GT section from the mobile application. I found the tank that I ran out of gas. It took a hair over 17 gallons, and the tank should know when it hits 2.5 gallons.
