CEL p0442

Alright so the other day I had a check engine light come one and when I had the opportunity I checked the code and it was p0442. A small EVAP emission leak. Dealership recommended I do a smoke test to find the leak. Code showed up during about an hour drive or so just cruising on the highway. I have a 2012 GT and mods are listed below. The over axle pipes I had put in by borla came with two heat shield rubber pieces to cover fuel lines near the piping. Only one was installed because my friend couldn't see where the second would get put in at. I'm afraid that might be where the leak would have occurred at since the protective piece was installed as intended. Just wondering if anybody has any previous experience with this and advice for how to move forward. Obviously I intend to get the second protective tube installed as intended.

I cleared the code and have driven the car two or three times since to see if the code would get thrown again right away or not. Nothing yet.

If it doesn't come back I wouldn't worry about it. It's an emissions related code and will not effect the performance of the vehicle so it's not a major concern. It's not something that will leave you in limp mode or on the side of the road.

If you're worried about it tho you can look under the car at the evap hoses running next to the exhaust pipes and see if there is any heat damage. Check for blistered hoses, brittle connectors, or any other obvious damage.

Yeah I spoke with the guy who does all the work on the car for me the other day and he explained the whole evap system to me. I thought it had something to do with fuel but its mainly an emissions thing. And like you said not a big deal, doesn't really affect functionality of the car. I'll still have it check and fixed but I'm feeling a lot less burdened about it now. Thanks for the input!

Yeah basically the evap system uses engine vacuum to accumulate any fuel vapors in the fuel tank and lines, condenses it and reroutes it into the engine. It's done to reduce what's called evaporative emissions. Has no effect on engine performance/reliability/efficiency whatsoever.
