CATS or CAT-LESS

heyyyyy guys, so far i have an axle back bassani, resonators removed, with a true X pipe.

Ordering a JLT intake, and a LUND tune within the next week or so

any big power difference's on going cat-less? obviously more air flow = more power, but with more air flow, is less power down low if you don't have much back pressure.

any input would be great.

Deleting the cats will gain you around 10 to 15 at the wheels.

Wishful.

Will also gain you a hefty Federal fine if stopped or sold without them.

SVT forum has several dyno threads on the matter, off-road x gains roughly 13 and off-road h just a little less. As for the cops, must be a lot of fox body owners paying federal fines by now.

I'm considering cat deletes mainly for the ability to run a tuner with the "ghost cam" tune but love a loud exhaust as well.

Hopefully they kept the cats, as selling a car either privately, or trading it in without any federal mandated equipment is illegal. If a dealer takes it on trade or buys it from you, they cannot sell it unless the cats are installed (by them if they buy it from you as is). If you sell a car to another person, even an "as is" clause will not protect you.

The cats used today are very free flowing; not like the older monolith ones used in the 80's and 90's.

Check it out on Google to protect yourself as a seller or buyer.

Simply a heads up. Does not matter to me.

I always wonder how people get away with removing the cats. A friend of mine took his truck to get inspected one time and it didn't have the cat on it and they made him have one installed or they were going to flag his vehicle so that he couldn't get it inspected anywhere else.

It is not worth it to me to remove mine for just a little extra bit of power.

You put them back in for smog/inspection. Then after they pass you, go take it back out.

Back pressure does not make torque, that is a very common misconception. Air velocity (be it intake and/or exhaust) is what creates torque, and a smaller diameter pipe will have a higher velocity, ergo; more torque.

There are several reasons and variables that can dictate horsepower and torque in this situation, but i'll avoid typing a book. A good set of tuned length headers, shorty or long tube, will create more torque even with a larger diameter. Also, with the advances in the 5.0's cam technology the exhaust gas pulses can also be manipulated to create more power, and gaining more torque on the low end when deleting the cats.

So, to bring this rant full circle: have the most open, well flowing exhaust you can, and a reputible tuner will have you seeing nothing but gains.

Inspection sticker blues? You have to pay to play. Catless is worth it on these 5.0's.....end of story.

And if you get caught (pulled over by a cop)...you'll be complaining a lot in the area of your wallet.

I've been pulled over a couple times. Turn the motor off and roll down the window. Never had a problem.

Nobody has mentioned high flow cats. I had high flow cats installed when I had my full 3" exhaust built. I looked inside a stock cat and inside the high flow ones and the difference is impressive. I can't imagine how the high flow cats impede the flow so much as to decrease horsepower that much. Just another thought for those of you still wanting to keep the cats!

The thing is that cats really don't have any impact on power unless your making ungodly amounts of power.this is another myth, back when cats first came out they were probable a lot more restrictive and people still think that just like you have to change oil after 3k.

The main reason people go without cats now a days is cost. An off road x pipe is almost half as much as one with cats.

I picked up close to .3 tenths when I removed my cats for an off road H-Pipe. I'd say they're worth it.
