Oil change

Hey guys,

I did my oil change earlier last year, i also put in a new filter but now recently i have been looking at my oil and it says it's at 13%. So i decide to go to autozone and buy 5 quartz of mobil 1 (used it last oil change). When i got home i filled my car and then let it sit. I turned it on later to see what my oil % was at but it still sits at 13%... Anyone know the problem?

It's a manual reset...

You did drain your old oil before you put the new in right...

I don't think he did. The 5.0 takes 8.5 quartz... 13% might not mean it only has 3-4 quartz left. He might have topped it off too much.

OMG I hope he did just go hope and dump 5 quartz in without checking his oil level lol

Yeah as they said, you have to manually reset it. The Info button If I remember till you see Oil Life, then the Reset button to the right. I never use the damn thing, I just keep track of the mileage and check it occasionally.

That indicator is Oil Life, not the amount left. You check that with your dipstick.

GT need 8.5 or 8 qts of oil? I got my change done recently and they put only 8. I will have to check the level again..

R.I.P. to your engine. 13% is the oil life, not how much oil is in the car.

That's right!! it's oil life indicator not level..
But how come your GT took another 5 qts of oil? Didn't you check the oil level with the stick?
Best thing is to take it a service center and get your oil changed. I don't think new oil mixed with old is a good idea!

I'm pretty sure he drained out the old oil.

He did say he put a new filter on so I'm pretty sure he did not just poor 5 quarts of oil into his crankcase.
He is just asking how to reset the Gage to zero.
He says he has a GT so he should have put in eight quarts and after reading this he probably went back and got three more quarts.
He is probably young and needs to learn to read the manual or ask someone that knows before jumping in to do some things he wants to do his self.

Nope he said he changed his oil like earlier last year. That's when he changed his filter also.

Oil Change

I hope it all worked out and hated to see this post, on the flip side it was a good laugh and at least now you know its oil life indicator the level will always be determined by your dipstick.

lol wouldn't 2 much oil just cause pressure and pop seals?
he probably did the math and added what he thought was the difference in the 13%

For new car owners, I still think its a good idea to read through the owners manual. It explains how the oil life percentage reading works, as well as how much oil to add/use during an oil change.

I've been guilty of this as well, but I make myself think back to my first time ownership of a car (old enough for it to be a model A; just joking, it was a 64 Beetle) and how nieve I was with all the maintenance.

I sorta tried to help but he never came back to clarify his actions. So it all became speculative.

I hope everything is fine but the 5.0 isn't an oil slurping rotary. Even at 13% life there's gonna be a helluva lot more than three quarts of oil left.

Ya hopefully his lack of return is because the vehicle is now in working order.
