Chipped Windshield - After Safelite

Only 3,500 miles and a rock hit my windshield the other day. Checked the forums and didn't see much getter advice than Safelite.

So I got my chip fixed today. Since I'd never had to do this before, I asked what to expect. Safelite told me that the windshield repair is not meant to be cosmetic first; it's to seal the glass and prevent spidering. I guess cosmetics comes in a close 2nd.

I took some pics and you'll see that it's nearly undetectable from the outside unless very close. From the inside, it's a different story. It's like having a scratch in a pair of glasses: I'll always see it, just off my right eye.

The last pic is a bit dramatic, as the (cell) camera was closer than the eyeball could get. It's not that much of an eyesore.

Any experience from people having done this? Is it about as good as you can expect? Subpar? Would anyone have taken their car somewhere else? If so, let me know last week -- before the rock hit my car.

Thanks!

I had a chip repaired by safe lite last year. Doesn't look as bad as yours but I think your chip is bigger to begin with. Of course it's right in front of you when driving.

Do it enough times at home and you can make it look just as good as the pro's. The 3M kit works the best for me. I've tried them all.

I did the same thing, granted it was with much smaller chips than this. It's still holding up strong.

That being said OP, this doesn't look "cosmetic", it looks like the tech did a crap job filling it. I had a chip about that size done by Safelite a few years ago on my Chrysler and it turned out just fine. I watched the guy do it and he did it the right way and I never had trouble with it.

I have 2 chips on mine. One of them actually spread since I didn't see the chip at first until it ran. It was on that bottom black part passengers side. Didn't take mine to Safelite, took mine to a local chip repair shop and they did a good job barely visible from the inside and you can't notice it from the outside unless you put attention.

Like someone said I watched the guy do it. Maybe this is what led to a good job.
