I have run other tuners numbers at the track on similar cars and lots of them don't impress me much. This is a canned 91 octane tune and I'm doing better than most people I see with "name brand" email 93R tunes.

Custom dyno tune? Sure hope that'd be better at the price point that's at. I paid $289 bucks for this in 2012.

Just curious bro, but do you have automatic or manual? Also, typically what 1/4 mile times is your 5.0 running using the pro cal tune?

He's got a manual and I remember it being an 11.9. Can't remember the MPH. I'd assume 114-115

Cool. Thanks. So here is what I really wonder. So 11.9 with a pro cal tune and based on his mods. I wonder how fast he would run the 1/4 mile loading a Lund tune on his car with everything being the same. How fast would he run the 1/4 mile loading up a AED tune? How fast would his 5.0 run the 1/4 mile loading up a VMP tune? How fast would his 5.0 run the 1/4 mile in loading up a Steeda tune?

How fast would his 5.0 run the 1/4 mile in after loading a MPT tune? It would be nice to have some quantitative track times using one mustang, same driver, same day loading numerous tunes to see who comes in # 1. Not car 1 race car 2 with different tunes but the same car as is and load various tunes.

Now you have quantitative times to show exactly whose tune makes the mustang the fastest and by how much.

Since you want to keep playing.

Much better Chief...$99.00 bucks for mine. Just saying...

So you have run one 11.9. How many more to back that up? What air temperature? Being able to dump the clutch on sticky DR/slicks at 5000 plus rpms is what making up the big difference NOT your Procal. LOL Hell man, take the credit for being a good driver.

And moving on...

Be hard to do in manual car and take out driver error. Auto would be more consistent and able to show more realistic plus or minus gains. Trust me, there would be no aftermarket tuners in business if Ford created the best and most powerful tune... LOL

I totally agree with you on both accounts. You need an automatic to conduct that test and curious how much slower a pro cal tune is compared to the main tuning player's. Up into yesterday I didn't even realize one could get a tune by Ford racing. I never hear people on the forums mention pro cal when tune threads come up. That is until now and my father told me about it because a Ford service manager told him.

It's a good starter tune. For people that want one but don't want to completely blow the warranty.

That makes sense and think someone like my father would be great with that. My fathers only gripe about his automatic 5.0 and its not really a gripe but would like better throttle response. He would like the delayed acceleration to be gone. My father hasn't mentioned anything negative about how the automatic shifts and their shift point's which having my pony tuned, the factory shifts are sloppy and horrid to me.

Sounds like a pro cal tuner may be what my father needs to rid the acceleration delay and still maintain a 3yr 36 month warranty. My father is not track racing of any sort and maybe will drive this car 3k miles a year. Its a play car for nice weather days only. My father couldn't care less about having a 2 or 3 tenths second faster 1/4 mile time.

Procal is good then.

I hate how sloppy and slow the factory shifting is. And your dad's gripe, the lag before acceleration.

I had been running a tuned pony for the past 3 years at the time I forgot how sloppy and slow the factory shift points are and were until I test drove a 2013 5.0 automatic. Good grief man. Ha ha ha ha.

Eventually I want the track pack brakes, GT500 rear brakes, and FRPP suspension.

No problem. I have an appointment with my dealer Tuesday, about my paint, so I'll ask about the FRPP tune. They are probably the biggest Ford dealer around here, sells Shelby's and Raptors, so idk what will happen.

I'm hoping that since they sell Shelby's, they will he fine with me doing some engine modding. I'll get it in writing and signed if they do.

FR tune is also 50 state emission legal. In CT they adopted Cali rules so there's not much out there on that front.

Is the oil filter that comes with the kit, part # CM-6731-FL820 ? I just want to make sure as I'm going to ask them to put that filter on my car on future oil changes.

Can you just get the tune without the K&N filter, oil filter or axle backs? I've already got Borla Touring ABs on and I don't believe in K&N filters. Not sure how the oil filter relates.

Mine was just the tuner and KN air filter - the dealer 'installed it' with the tune. It takes a minute to swap it in or out.

I saved a few bucks buying the tuner/air filter combo and the gt 500 a/b separately.

I paid $289 for the tuner/filter combo in early 2012.

So OP and I met up for a little test drive of our cars yesterday.

His car: 2014 GT coupe, 5000 miles, with ProCal, aftermarket wheels (weights unknown), stock weight 3,675 lbs

My car: 2014 GT conv., 2,400 miles, no tune, TSW wheels (saved about 20 lbs from stock), 1 pc aluminum driveshaft (saved 20 lbs), stock weight 3,792 lbs.

The unknown variable is his wheels. They could actually weigh more than stock and be slowing him down. My car has lost 40 lbs from stock so 3,750 (mine) vs. 3,675(his). Only 75 lb difference, though my car has a lot less rotation / unsprung mass b/c of the lightweight wheels & alum. DS.

So we did a completely unscientific rolling "race". Then swapped drivers & we each drove the other's car. And to be honest I could barely tell the difference between our 2 cars. I believe the lightweight performance wheels & DS that I've put on completely negated his coupe weight advantage and ProCal tune advantage.

Now maybe we should have done a 0-60 race, or 1/8th mile or something, but it was mid-day with traffic around so not really a good idea. (maybe another time)

The one thing I did notice is that his engine or exhaust sounded louder even though we both have GT500 exhausts. We later figured out, he had soundtube with a baffle removed vs. I completely removed the soundtube all together (better for bluetooth calls).

Thanks to OP for having some fun with our cars and letting me try out his ProCal tuned car.

Now we just need a 3rd participant next time with a real aftermarket tune (anything besides Ford tune) on a 13-14 GT witout many mods, maybe GT500 axlebacks. ANYONE in the NOLA area?

That's for the 20 lb decrease in rotation mass of the DS. My wheels also shaved 20 lbs off rotation mass (approx. 5 lbs per wheel). I know the engine output has not changed. But by their math, maybe my 2 changes are equivalent to a 28hp increase.

P.S. I'd recommend the Shaftmaster's DS, its cheap and perfect fit & install. And it felt like an immediate change in engine/throttle response.

I'm looking hard at this tune due to the warranty advantages. For those who have installed this tune, have you experienced any pinging? My car is stock except for the borla touring axle backs.

Maybe. But I could feel a difference in my seat of pants dyno after doing both upgrades.

I bought directly from Shaftmasters. It looks like Steeda is selling their DS's under their name for a $100 mark up.

There's a billion threads on this. You definitely want good 91+ gas with the tune. Occasionally, I get brief rattle passing through 4500 rpm, usually on winter fuel. I do a profile relearn with the tool, every once in a while and that helps keep it in check.

I will tell you this, though. I have been running the tune for almost 3 years, pushed the car into the 11s full weight with it. A month ago, I finally pulled the plugs to have a look. No indications of an detonation damage anywhere on any plug and the car spec'd out on a comp check exactly even across all 8 cylinders.

OP here with more reviews and insight for those debating what to go with. I literally just took the Ford Racing Tune off my car. Had a JBA off road h pipe with cat delete installed and had Shaun with AED send me a SCT 4X tuner and 3 tunes that I installed last night and went joy riding with the lope idle one on. Holy ****!!!!!! The Ford Tune may as well have been stock compared to this beast now. Every red light people will be looking at you and give their approval with a thumbs up. THIS is what owning a 5.0 is all about my friends. I went with the Ford tune originally to "play it safe" I guess. It was a new car and I wanted to fix the delay in throttle response and add some torque. It was great at first but I wanted more eventually and so will you, I guarantee it! I couldn't sleep last night thinking about the new tune and can't wait to jump back in today and go show the friends. If you are debating between the two, definitely save your money and go with a AED tune or something comparable from the start. Shaun over at AED has been great to work with and always gets back to my emails ASAP. I'll be around if you have any questions. I have a 14 5.0 Auto with off road H pipe, cat delete and GT500 axel backs, and 285/40/19 in the rear. What a beast she is now!!!
