Rear Gear install

Hi everyone,

I'm a new member here, I have lurked a long while before deciding to buy a stang. Yesterday I picked up a Race Red 2012 Mustang GT Premium. It's got the Brembo package on it, and the previous owner (unknown to me before test driving at the dealer) put on Borla's Axleback exhaust, I'm not sure which one, its loud so I'm guessing it's the ATAK exhaust. Onto my question, I cannot find the rear diff listed anywhere and from what I can find, the stock rear gear is supposed to be 3.31, but I have seen a few places say 3.15. It is a 6spd manual so from what I can tell it has the MT82 transmission. I've modded cars in the past so I'm not a stranger to turning wrenches and the like, however this is the first RWD car I've owned and I know nothing about changing the rear gears.

I want to put 3.55 gears in, but I am not sure how to tell what I have, and how do I go about swapping the rear gears. I read if you are ~30k miles then you should replace the bearings too, my car has 16k miles on it so I don't know if I should be really worried about that. If I don't what could happen? Also does swapping rear gears void a factory warranty? I would appriciate any help, I have been searching all over but cannot find a consistent answer. Even if you guys just link me some reading anything will help.

Thank you.

I think most manuals came with 3.31.
I have a 2011 race red auto vin # says it's 3.15.
Until two weeks ago that's what I thought I had. Was installing my gt500 axlebacks and seen where someone used a paint pen and wrote 373 on the diff. Cover. Did the old fashion mark the wheel and drive shafts and count the turns to verify. It is in fact a 3.73

Only autos come with 3.15's. There's a tag on the inside of the drivers door with an axle code. That will tell you what you have.

Going from 3.31's to 3.55's is hardly worth it.

If you have 3.73's in your auto someone installed them. It didn't come that way from the factory.

I understand that, the car was bought used, just assumed it was 3.15 because of the poor take off acceleration. After looking at it while underneath it is when I realized it wasn't stock

i would not go under 3.73 honestly. talk to your dealership about the warranty you may have to have them install it to keep the warranty.

You might want to check your window sticker to see if your car was ordered with shorter gears (although it won't tell you if the last owner swapped them out).

Use this link & add your VIN number to the end.

The axle code is on the door and on the axle tube.

Poor take off with 3:73? I thought it would be a little better, even though your ET would hardly change.
