Stock tune no more

Finally, I'm about to make some power on my 5.0 I've had my car for almost 3 years now and I'm finally going to slap on all my bolt-ons and tune it accordingly. I have done almost every suspension mod you can think of and I love how the car handles, it's just that the factory tune is getting old. After owning my car for 3 years, I can tell the stock tune sucks until you hit 4k rpm before redlining at 7k. I normally do autocross on my car, so when I tune it, my biggest concern is throttle response and engine braking/deceleration. It seems as if the throttle is still open when you're trying to slow the car down by engine braking and I hate that.

With that being said, I have some Kooks long tubes 1-3/4 with an off road X and I also have a JLT cold air intake that I've been waiting for too long to install. I know these mods will definitely wake the car up with the right tune. My question is: what tune/tuner should I go with? I'm not a drag racer, neither am I looking for the most peak horsepower. I just want good throttle response, be able to decelerate like a normal car, reliability, and good drivability. I would perhaps even consider a "ghost cam" tune to look "cool" at my local cars and coffee meet in Irvine, CA lol. Let me know what you guys would recommend. Thanks in advance.

I think I'm going with Steeda. I've seen nothing but good reviews from them.

I went with Steeda to begin with as well and was never satisfied with the tune. Shifts were all over the place and the drivability was never how I wanted it. Switching over to the mike rousch tune was the greatest thing I've ever done to my car. It really is unbelievable.

Also when I bought the steeda tune, I bought the CAI with it. The cold air intake was missing parts when I got it, and then after installing and uploading the tune, I got a CEL after about 20 miles. (Lean bank 1 and 2) Turns out they didn't factor in my CAI with the tune, even though I bought them at the same time and filled out the form correctly.

Everybody sells " canned " tunes. ( even my tuner, JDM )
To get the most out of your mods, a custom tune is the way to go.
A tuner can program you car to act exactly how you want it to.
( instead of hoping a canned tune will work in your car )
I'm sure there is someone in Ca. that can tune your car..

There's a few tuners out here in socal. A good tune will run you $450+ out here. If I buy the tuner from steeda, I believe it'll come with 2 tunes included. I can't really go wrong with it since I need the handheld tuner. I'll test it out and see how they work, if it seems problematic, then I'll get a dyno tune.

A custom tune is one that you datalog and then send to your tuner for him to look at.

You don't need a dyno tune. Just datalog someone's, anyone's tune and have them look at the files.

maybe you know something I don't then, are we talking about the Rev Auto in Baltimore? when I first inquired about it, I was told they refer email tunes to Shaun at AED, at any rate, they were close enough for me to drive there and get tuned

Superchips is the way to go, all those other "leading" brands get soggy in milk.

Who did you work with on your tuning? This is not typical of a Steeda tune ... nor the way a CAI would be shipped out.

I would love to look up your order number & speak with you off-line in regards to your issues.

You can reach me at tim@steeda.com ... I look forward to hearing from you & understanding the issues you experienced.

Best Regards,

TJ

.................The above statement sounds more like a canned tune.
.
A custom tune is when the tuner takes the car out, datalogs, & adjusts the program accordingly. This may happen several times before the tune is exactly where he wants it.

You don't need a dyno tune. Just datalog someone's, anyone's tune and have them look at the files.
.
Other than a baseline, a trip to the dyno is usually the last step in the process, after all the datalogging and program adjustments are finalized. Some small adjustments may result. ( my 14 was detuned from 818 to 780 )
