Exhaust. Looking for the right combo.

So I'm new to this site, bear with me. Picked up a used 14' GT a few days ago (finally... been wanting one since high school) and I have a couple questions before I start changing things. It came without cats and I haven't taken a full inventory of whats under there yet. I love noise but I'd rather be legal so I'm not jumping through hoops with emissions and such.

My question:
Can you, or should you, use high flow cats with an o/r x-pipe? Would this completely negate the purpose of the modification? I want the sound without dumbing it down or choking out any performance.

My original plan was to go with a Borla ATAK catback system, then I considered a slightly more cost effective catted BBK x-pipe, a resonator delete and some Roush axlebacks. Any thoughts, help or wisdom is welcome.

Thanks y'all.

That would still be illegal. Only completely legal option would be to find a factory H pipe.

Thanks. While that does answer a question, I should have been more specific. I just want to pass emissions, guess I should have just said that to begin with. I live in Texas.

Are the X and H pipes more or less the same in terms of sound and performance? And do you have it catted? If so, what type of cats do you have on it? Also, did you leave the resonator on or did you cut it out?

the h pipe will be more deeper than an x pipe. as for texas emissions i can tell you i have no cats and even tho illegal, i have still passed emissions. as for combo on exhaust you may want to hear some in person or just try it yourself ussually people have different combinations on exhaust.

i left my resonators on my setup

I still have my resonators. No cats. H pipe sounds better in my opinion. X pipe is a bit raspy but everyone has a different taste. Unless you get an x pupe with cats then it might sound nice not sure tho

You really need to contact the local dmv and ask about laws and regulations, as it can vary from state to state and even county to county. From there you will be able to make a more well informed decision. Btw not a fan of the roush if you don't have cats

Roush with resonator deletes sounds amazing, I have pype bombs with an after cat x pipe and I don't like the way it sounds, too mellow/toneless. It sounded way better with the H pipe. I am switching to roush with resonator deletes as well however I haven't completely decided if I will put back in the stock h pipe or try the roushs with resonator deletes with my x pipe.

Let me know how it sounds i was thinking about deleting the resonators. Right now i have an offroad h pipe and with the roush it sounds pretty badass.

Yeah I will for sure. I think I'm going to go with the Roush/3 inch custom over axle pipe resonator delete/stock h pipe and stock cats, not sure how soon I'll have that all done In the next month I'm hoping we will see. But once I do it I will post a video with my opinion too

This is the video that got me thinking about this setup.

However, I hit another thread yesterday and found some good videos with pypes o/r xpipes and pype bombs. Like this one. Great tone.

Don't go pype bombs and o/r x. I ran that for a week way too loud and raspy, doesn't sound good. It isn't a good loud. And that first video with the black 5.0 with red stripes is what made me want to get that setup too

Appreciate the insight. Can't beat first hand experience. And yea, that video with the Roush setup is what got me going in this direction.

Yeah I thought I was gona love it on my 14 5.0... I didn't necessarily mind the volume but the tone was awful, it was so raspy. My friend had roushs with an offroad x, sounded a lot better but I think the H pipe sounds better overall

Yea, that's what I've been noticing while searching for this. Seems that the H pipe gives a more genuine muscle car tone over the rasp of the x. I'm fine with rasp but I want that consistant, strong tone. So yea, I'll probably need to look at an H.

Yup I should be putting back on my stock H pipe this Thursday or Saturday morning... muffler deletes sound good by themselves imo but they get wayy too raspy when you start to straight pipe the rest of the exhaust. The roush with 3 inch resonator deletes and h pipe is hopefully gona be a home run. If it sounds like it does in the video you linked its exactly what I'm looking for and it isn't too expensive either

Pype Bombs, Boss 302 Quad exhaust with cats and resonators. Legal and sounds crazy. No drone and sounds like pure muscle car. I get looks all the time, sounds great.

How much was the quad exhaust? Cheapest I've seen the boss side exhaust was 749.99

Thats Roush with a custom 3 inch resonator delete. Everything else is stock. That is exactly what I am probably going to switch to as well.

Yea, definitely post a clip of what it sounds like. I'm still undecided but that's one of my possibilities. I actually had a guy yell at me from his truck on the way home last night asking what I had and telling me it sounded bada**. But I know I can still make it sound better.

Yeah I'm not sure if I'll keep the x pipe on there with the resonator delete and roush ab or put the h pipe on, might just keep the x on and see how I like it at first

Dynatech longtubes to an OR mid pipe to GT500 axlebacks and never worry about your exhaust again.

Personally that isn't nearly loud enough for me. I like the volume on the pype bombs but the Roush has volume and tone IMO especially with resonator deletes

Whatever you do don't run no cats and roush axles backs.... You will have nothing but headaches. I ran BBK Long Tubes and BBK Off Road X Pipe with Resonator deletes and Roush Axle Backs and I couldn't handle the sounds got rid of them within a week after purchasing them. Went with LongTubes Xpipe Resenator deletes and GT500 quads in my opinion it sounds perfect 👍👍
To me Roush Axles backs are made to have them by themselves
Otherwise it just gets ridiculous
