My 2010 GT is whining when I decelerate

New guy here. I have a 2010 GT with about 60K miles that is making this annoying whine when I decelerate - sounds very much like a Go Cart if that makes sense. This is heard when I decelerate and happens regardless of when I'm in gear or neutral (I have a manual transmission). The tone of the whine adjusts with my speed when decelerating. For example, a higher pitched whine at 70 mph and the pitch respectively lowers as I decelerate to 20ish mph.

I don't think it happens when I accelerate, if it does, it's faint. No modification to drivetrain nor repair. I've attached a very poor video to capture the sound, which is hardly audible with all the noise in my cabin.

I fear the worst. Does anyone know what this most likely is?

Thanks,
Mike

It's sound like it could be your gears

If it's the gears, does that mean they need replacement?

Could just be low on fluid or need some adjustments. More then likely it is the rear end gears. Not the end of the world.

That's certainly reassuring, thanks. I'm not mechanically inclined so I'll have to take it to a Firestone or something. Any recommendations to prevent me from getting hosed?

Just tell them u just want the fluid level checked. Don't let on there is any issue. Routine check. Go from there.

Well, the rear end was shot and required rebuild. The bearings wore down and splintered into the ring and pinion. The job's since been completed and the whining sound is gone.

Thanks for everyone's help and input

The dealership I bought the car from was kind enough to cover the cost of the repair. It's a long story, bought the short version is I got really hosed by their previously salesman and they were willing to help make things right. But previously, I had taken it to a very highly rated Transmission shop in my area and they quoted $1,500 for bearing replacement and $2K for complete rear end rebuild.

Good to hear they set you right. There are still some good people left in this world.
