What is wrong with our manual shifters?

Hey guys,

I'm not trying to repeat anything but I couldn't answer my question through search.

Does anyone find Neutral to 1 and 1 to 2 shifts odd? Feels like there's too much friction. Feels like clutch is almost half on when it's fully pushed in.

Any ideas? I know it's said that the transmission is pretty ****ty. Would getting a short shifter and full kit fix this?

It's not really the transmission, moreso the single-arm brace design between the shifter and the transmission. Here's a link to a thread on here that has a lot of info on improving the MT82 shifting. Here is MORE improvement for the MT82!

An aftermarket shifter bracket would tighten that up pretty well.

Sometimes at a light I'll have trouble getting it into 1st and then subsequently into 2nd but after that it's smooth and it doesn't happen that much

Most remote shifters have issues like this. As has been said, help is definitely available, inexpensively. I put a bracket, the whiteline insert and a nicer billet ball knob. Much better but still not absolutely perfect. It's technique too. Don't manhandle this shifter, just direct it at the gate with fingers and open palm.

I've shot this car over 100 times on slicks, no missed shifts I didn't cause myself.

I'll say it is a fussy shifter and always needs attention paid to it. It it doesn't go into 1st I try 2nd then 1st (repeat if needed) I like the MGW & Redline MTL but for me the two biggest improvements were learning to use the springs (and counter them) and motor mounts. It ain't perfect but when it want it's real nice...other times it just is clunky or as 5LHO said my fault.

I installed a Barton Industries Short Shifter (same as Ford Racing short shifter) in my '14 GT. It is the best mod that I have made - night and day difference. Shifts are smooth and precise. No more missed shifts.

Thanks for everything guys. Does anyone have the ford racing kit installed? I'd like to keep the warranty if it's comparable.

I have a barton with the bracket that comes with the shifter, not the two post. I installed the MGW solid bushings on the shifter arm and that is honestly the best $25 (including shipping) I have ever spent on any car mod. Solid as a rock.

For those still working on the factory shifter, mgw offers a support bushing upgrade for 25 bucks shipped that stiffens the link arm between the shifter box and the trans by replacing the cushy factory bushing with a steel one. Mines on the way. I already have a steeda bracket and whiteline bushing and have been pretty satisfied with that. For 25 though, this is worth a try. You need to call them to order it.
