key fob antenna?

so about two months ago, my key fobs stopped working. right after i got my oil changed. I've tried changing the batteries and reprogramming the key fobs and still nothing. so i finally got to take my car to ford and have them take a look at whats going on. the service advisor started to ask me questions about my wheels. if i replaced them or have aftermarket wheels on. nope. stock chrome 5 spoke wheels. only thing I've done to them is plasti dip them black. and according to them the plasti dip is interfering with the antenna to the key fobs. sounds ridiculous but I'm gonna go with them. so imma take the plasti dip off and take it back to ford. any input helps. I'm just confused. lol

So the antenna for the key fob is behind the wheels. AND plasti dip can block it. Sounds a little fishy.

This sounds about right. The antenna that works your remote start is on your rims or around them. So you can not change your rims to aftermarket unless you move the antenna. If you rotate your tires you need to make sure you get the antenna and move it to the correct spot or well it will not work. I think this service adviser has figured out the key to make good air into pure S)9t.

I know for a remote start they put the antenna up near the rear view mirror to make sure they have the range. I think the OEM antenna is under the hood by the firewall.

Take the key fob to autozone or a parts house and have it checked. They have a little device that you point it at and it will let you know if the battery is good or bad. Which tells you the fob is working.

OP, before the service dude told you that, he looked at his buddies and said watch this.
after you left, they rolled around on the floor laughing.
your remote key entry antenna is inside the car, most likely at rear or front glass. Possibly under the hood but Def not anywhere near your wheels.

avoid this dealer......

in fact, you should tell us who it is as they deserve public shaming.

Oh yeah the reason for your confusion is the Service Managers stupidity.

Best thing to do is send the link for this thread to the service manager and let them know in your email you will be sharing your strange experience with the other mustang boards as well. List there name and your service writers name in this thread so others can avoid them. You are doing the community a service.
