Had my Mustang for a year and didn't know it had 3.73s

So I looked up my mustangs window sticker today and little did I know that my car has 3.73 gears in it lol got it used from a Chevy dealership a year ago and they didn't even know it was a Brembo car and had roush exhaust 😂 crazy because I never would have guessed that it has 3.73s as the gears never struck me as being that short

Yeah. Same thing happened to me. I thought I had the stock one and saw the window stickers with the 3.73s. Originally that's how I got my tune. I got my tune redone with the 3.73s and it made a big difference. Only sad part is that my MPG went down.

Had my Mustang for a year and didn't know it had 3.73s

Before I was able to get 28 MPG. Now the highest I've been able to get is 23. Although the car was a bit more sluggish prior. Click image for larger version

mpg on this car has more to do with road speed than gearing. The o/d is ridiculously long on this car. I have routinely gotten under 9 litres/100k by keeping it at 60. (That's 30 mpg in my gallons up north here) on a fully loaded 3.73 car.

Just came back from a trip south, drove to Vegas, Utah, Socal, it was a balancing act between extra speed eating extra fuel and lower speed meaning more time taken. I just said screw it and locked it on 75 mph and went with it. 12 l/100 from that was an acceptable balance.

I get 25 average per tank. I drive a lot of freeway though. If your truly not stoping on it every 5 seconds and your getting that low you might want to take it in for service. It should get better than that.

Just enjoying my 420 HP daily driver

When my car was about two months old, I took it on a highway cruise for about two hours at 75 mph. The BEST mileage I got was 24 mpg. I now have 6k miles on the car and my combined city/highway (50/50) mileage is about 20.5mpg. Would love to see 28!

Your car is a 5.0?? If so that's crazy good gas mileage. I should try that two hour thing. Best gas mileage I've had was 25 mpg but I was going 65 for about 1.5 hours.
So idk how yall do it. I have a 12 gt with 3:73s, no cats, roush exhaust, jba h pipe, and manual. And my car only has 16k miles so it's not even bad I think I should be getting better gas mileage lol. I mean in town I do drive a Bit reckless but not that bad.

A 5.0 w 3.73 getting mid 20's is just awesome. In my v6 6mt w 2.73s, I've done 32mpg on a road trip from Denver to Phoenix averaging 75mph. But around here in phoenix I get 28ish and that is 90% highway.

When i got the 28 MPG i was doing roughly 73-75. but this time i was doing about 75-78 and only averaged 23 with the revised tune. My city gas MPG sucks. i live in a really small town where there is like a stop sign or light every 100 feet. That and im really enjoying the sound of my new 302 quad exhaust. Ive been averaging about 14-15 in the city.

I'm kind of surprised that you couldn't tell you had 3.73's. With the MT82 you can shift through all 4 gears between stoplights and you can even take off in second without slipping the clutch. I guess it's what you're used to. I put 3.73's in my 97 Cobra and sure made it more fun to drive than the OE 3.23's.
I just got back from a 600+ mile road trip from Oregon down to California on Interstate 5. Going through the Siskiyou's and doing a lot of corner carving sometimes at speed, I had a blast. Going down I got 25+mpg.......coming back was a little different as myself and a Mod'd Focus ST were carving corners for almost 40 miles......(if anyone has watched "Space Balls", then you know what "Ludicrous Speed" is).............my mileage dropped, but I still averaged 24mpg for the entire 600 mile trip.
Personally I think the .65 underdrive in 6th is perfect. I had a .83 underdrive in a Gear Vendors overdrive/underdrive in my hotrod and it just wasn't enough.

It's my first stick shift car so I wouldn't have any idea when I first got it what the gears were without the window sticker. I guess it is just what I'm used to because I haven't really paid attention before

Really?! I've been 50/50 hwy/traffic and have been averaging 15L/100km and I've been light on the pedal to get better mileage! What's your secret?!

Sorry if I forgot to add some important details. My car is a 5.0, but it has the 3.31 gears, not 3.73. At the time, it was bone stock, except for the Brembo wheels. That's why I don't understand how someone with 3.73s is getting such great mileage. Here's a real kicker for you too. My 17 year old son drives the car the most and he's the one getting the good combined mileage. I drove from North of Orlando to south of Tampa when I got the 24mpg. He's addicted to trying to keep the green bar that shows the average mpg above the average. The highway system around Orlando is horrible, so most of his driving is about 45mph with stop lights everywhere. However, the places he goes, also allows him to get up to 60-70mph for parts of his drive.

If you got it tuned for a lower gear and you actually have 3.73's, then everything is going to be off. The car is going to think you're going faster... thus it THINKS you're getting better gas mileage. ie: you drove a 150 mile trip according to google maps, but your car thinks you drove 200 miles and got 33% better mpg b/c of that inflated miles / speedometer reading.
