Auto Transmission Fluid Change

I see a lot of posts related to manual transmission fluid. Not much related to auto transmission.

What fluid would you recommend for a 2011 GT? I am looking for manufacturer and weight please. Any help would be appreciated. Car is about to turn 50k

The factory fluid is Motorcraft Mercon LV. There is a Ford Tech on youtube that shows how to change the fluid in one of these transmissions and how to get the correct level of fluid. It looks like it's a pain in the *** since you have to have the car raised up and level to get the correct level reading. This guy also recommends changing the fluid in these transmissions at 60,000 miles and not at the 150,000 that Ford recommends.

Personally I'd say 50,000 is better. I do a lot of tranz. rebuilds. On a performance car I change every 25-30,000. Ordered a new 2014 GT last year and I just got an extra capacity pan with the dipstick that goes up into the engine well. Holds an extra 3 qts. More capacity equals cooler running tranz. Love the fact the current GT's hold 8 qts. of engine oil. Very good move by Ford.

Do you have any clearance issues with the extra capacity pan? I thought about buying one and I already bought the dipstick but haven't installed it yet. Even though my car is not lowered, I'm a little nervous about putting on a pan that hangs down lower and those pans are made out of cast aluminum so they can shatter if hit hard enough.

Thank you Grabber. I called Amsoil and they recommend signature series fuel efficient fluid. I'll be ordering next week. Now just need to find the best price out there.

I have the car in storage at the moment so I haven't installed it yet. But I'd say depth may increase roughly 3/4 of an inch. Not much of an issue. I wouldn't be concerned with the strength of the cast pan, they are very durable.

Ok, thanks. I may try one out then.
