Changing map lights

Hey guys quick question about changing out the map lights. I have tried to pull the housing off of the headliner and it just seems like it doesn't want to come off. I know you have to apply a good amount of force but I feel like if I apply any more force than I already am it will break or something. Do you have to unclip something or im just not pulling hard enough. thanks

When I changed mine I thought I was going to break it but it does actually require some force. Just be careful with the wires when you get it off

I want to say there are some clips on each side that you can kind of push in that area to help. But yes it does require some force, but for sure worth it. The car lights up nice at night.

Not to thread jack but anyone know about hyperglow? Like the led slighty glowing when lights are off? On my audi I had the same bulbs and they didn't glow after lights off but now in the mustang they do. I got cheapo ebay ones btw(friend also has cheapo ebay ones and his dont glow in his 370). Is it because they require so little power to turn on? Thx

Hmmm. I'll have to check if my cheapo Vip auto parts ones do that, didn't notice before. I know I've had them "strobe" in a previous car. It's the cars computer sending a very tiny current to all light sources to check for burned out bulbs so that it can tell you, "hey bra, you got a trunk light out" when you start the car or push the system check button.

I think I have seen some lights on ebay that say if your lights stay lit up after they are powered off you may need to buy their resistor kit. So that being said they may need a little resistor in line. Maybe, hell I dunno lol

They are lit just enough to notice. I changed them out(while ago) with same type and still did it. Only one of the leds was partially lit on ones i changed. Just going to leave it alone most likely, they do end up going completely off when i get in the car next.

I ordered these and license plate lights from LMR and have been waiting for it to get warm to install them. Hopefully I don't get the afterglow.

Well I got the lights out. Go to put the led in and it doesn't go into the light it plugs into the socket but won't fit into the housing. One problem after the other here. I also looked into it and made sure these leds were the some type as the ones from American muscle t10 wedge smd 5050 and they don't fit!

Just make the hole a little bigger. I used a knife and trimmed parts out of the hole until the light fit.

If you had a big drill bit that would work to make the hole bigger also. I just didn't have one big enough.

Yea I used a knife to get bulbs to fit. Totally forgot about that otherwise would have said something. Make sure the shavings fall out or you get them out

I did the same damn thing. Aftermarket map light leds. I pulled the whole housing off, pulled the incandescent bulbs out, plugged the leds in and then the led itself wouldn't fit through the hole in the housing. So I got a pocket knife and pried the lenses off and put the leds through the lense side of it instead of the housing side. Works like a charm. Way better looking than factory. I do have the infamous "ghost" lights now. As in my leds are on like 1% on when the car off and the keys are out.

I didn't have any of those issues? What brand LEDs did you get originally? I bought the raxioms and the only issue I had was that one didn't work but all I had to do was flip it around. Problem solved.

Well I wanted red ones so I had to go with eBay ones but the thing is the ones I got on eBay are literally the same as the raxiom ones t10 smd 5050 I guess maybe the led part on the raxiom ones are thinner but I'm not sure. All I know is my red ones didn't fit and I couldn't get raxiom ones cause raxiom has no red ones or I would have.

Gotcha. I was just lost since I didn't have that issue at all. Glad you figured it out. The raxioms are very slim.

$30 for Raxiom? Are they insane?
I used cheap ones from auto parts store, made the holes slightly bigger with a cone shaped drill bit and I get no ghost light when the car is off.
$10 they're all made in China anyway. Unless you're talking Cree LED...then that's a whole new level of quality and made in USA too. Those are more for exterior off road use though.

The ones I got at Autozone work just fine. You do have to gently persuade the squarish bulb through a round hole, but it will fit.

Yea the one my friend gave me just needed a little shove through but the ones I originally bought wouldn't go. Ya those raxiom ones are $30 absolutely ridiculous.

It is expensive and I would never pay that much either. I got mine Black Friday 19.99 which is much more reasonable. Especially with free shipping.

My buddy owns a LED company. He said all his stuff is heavy duty off road stuff made in America. He doesn't make any of it, he's just a middle man selling it cheaper than the competition and taking a cut off the top. He gave me a bag of leds for free. Blue, white, red, yellow. They work very well and are stupid bright.

Like others have said, just yank the crap out of it. I put diodedynamic stage 2s in my maps, trunk, and license plate. Couldn't be happier.

I finally installed the map lights I got from LMR. I had the same problem that the new LEDs were too large to fit when taking the whole dome light assembly down. I ended up pulling out the factory bulbs, then re-attach the dome light assembly, then popped out the plastic pieces covering the lights, and then put the new LEDs in. This way I didn't have to make the holes larger. It's a lot easier to pop out the plastic pieces when the assembly is attached to the headliner.

I also changed to the LED license plate lights from LMR. They seemed to work fine at first, but it seems like they might be causing the car to blow a fuse (#22 fuse from passenger side box). This makes the license plate lights go out and tail lights (not brake lights). Not sure if I'm missing something, or if I should just re-install the stock ones. The map lights are causing no issues.

I replaced factory map lights. What a great improvement! Not sure why you would want to brighten your license plate?
