Shifting Movement

Not your typical shifting question.

I'm new to manuals as I've always had autos but I'm enjoying the change!

One question I have is if the shifting is supposed to have the following feel:

Clutch in
Pull it out of gear to N (1 movement)
Neutral to next gear (1 movement).

I can't seem to pull it and put into gear in one move as there is a notchy feeling pulling it out, and another notchy feeling putting it in gear.

Usually happens 1-2 and 2-3.

Not always but most of the time.

I've got the hurst 2-post shifter.

Can any one of you pull it out and put into gear in one smooth motion? Or is there always that slight pause in between?

Ideas?

Thanks!

There will always be a little stop at the top but, I shift with two fingers, all the time, no issues. You should not let the shifter centre between shifts, if that's what you mean. I have a few more things done: Steeda bracket, Whiteline trans bushing, Billet knob and MGW shifter arm bushing.

Now, I have been driving stick for over 30 years but this car still took a bit of larnin', no question. The remote shifter and the tight gates made necessary by 6 speeds meant a little learning curve.

Now Hurst is pretty notorious for notchiness. some like it, some don't. I loved it on the T5 in my old '88 but, I wouldn't buy it for this trans, personally.

Every manual transmission I've ever owned had some feeling of coming out of one gear and into the next. Some are more pronounced than others but I consider this normal. I like the feedback as it confirms the lever has gone into the next gate. The 1-2 shift with the M-82 is on the stiffer end of that feedback scale, but at least my car (MGW & BlowFish equipped) feels really nice through the rest of the gears.

Alrighty then, thanks for the responses.

I'm thinking of the blowfish racing one as a possibly next upgrade but everyone's saying it's pretty overkill if the car isn't tracked.

I just want butter smooth shifts when I drive It hard.

I have the Hurst shifter with a Barton 2 post bracket. It is some what notchy, I like it being old school/classic look. When the transmission is hot, shifts can be hammered away in mine. But, before the trans is sufficiently warm I take it easy, I shift nice and deliberate. Have to kinda let the syncros settle and grab into the next gear change while passing thru neutral in one smooth easy pressure motion with a slight hesitation, I guess. Things are much, much better with the gear oil warmed up.

Nothing will give you a butter smooth shift. Even with the mgw race spec, there is a notchy feeling going into each gear. It's a characteristic of the mt82. The smoothest shifter you'll get in this regard is the stock shifter.

I wish there was a shifter that could be stiff and hold things in place like the race spec and also have a very easy silky smooth shift like the stock shifter. It's a trade off I guess. The gear nibble ****ing pisses me off though. I've tried every shifter and it doesn't go away.

Foregoing the notchy feel for a moment, what can I expect in terms of difference in feel between Hurst 2 Post and the blowfish race spec?

I disagree, I have the MGW race spec in and it was very notchy at first. Now it is not as much. It has a reassuring engagement as you actually put it into gear. Row-ing through the gears is the same, much smoother now that it's broken in vs the first couple days after install.

But it's still not as easy as the stock shifter. I had the race spec for about 15k miles.

I agree with you both none are as smooth but it will fix so many other things wrong with the stock shifter. Once you go to a shorter throw they all will be a little notchy but later on OP will be getting locked out and not liking that also.

They have a street version of the blowfish bracket now that has a lot less NVH. Just FYI.

I don't have it, I just know it exists.

Mikeyt03, you drove with the race spec for 15k miles? It just came out in November!

I have a blowfish bracket and am extremely happy with it.

I'm using the stock shifter though...a lot of the complaints about increased NVH came from people using an aftermarket shifter.

I tried the Barton Two Post first.. and didn't really notice much improvement in shifting, but I DID notice an increase in NVH.

Moving from the Barton to the Blowfish, my NVH actually went away.

With that being said, that MGW race spec looks impressive.

I've got the newer mgw race spec in and its wonderful. Slightly more nvh but you'd have to drive around with your hand on the shift knob 100% of the time to really notice. I can't recommend the mgw enough it is perfect.
