Try this link. Seems clearer then the Ford instructions.
I pulled my car out of storage yesterday so today I joined in on the fun. I used the procedure listed in the link above after I reset to defaults. I downloaded the update file and installed the contents onto my fat32 formatted flash drive. Then I did as the pictures said and a little less than ten minutes later it came up with "Installation Complete" on the screen. I left my car running during the update install since my battery was a little low from being in storage.

I noticed during the installation process it rebooted a few times since it showed different things on the screen sometimes. Then when I looked at my flash drive on the computer it had an XML file in the SyncMyRide folder which I then uploaded to Ford. Now my account says I am updated to DL3T-14D544-AE (version SYNC v4.4) from DL3T-14D544-AD (version Gen1-4.2.1.T). My update went flawlessly and now my Bluetooth on my phone works. Last fall I had been using my phone with Bluetooth and it stopped working. Couldn't sync at all anymore but now with this update it works!!! Glad I stumbled onto this thread. I wish all the rest the same luck.

You stated you reset to default. I had thought about that and wondered if that would be the way to go for others when they upgraded.

Ok, that works running under Bluetooth audio, but app link still says it can't find any compatible apps or some such unless I plug the phone into the USB jack.

Any idea what steps you have to go through for the tech package? Couldn't figure it out.

I guess I still need to be plugged in for the app link to work. I always just played the normal app through the Bluetooth anyway. Never saw the point with plugging it in.

Well after 1.5 hours I have given up. Not sure if it could be an issue trying to work with the Macbook. I had the thumb drive formatted to fat32 but still no luck after I tried a few different thumb drives. Guess I'll take it to the dealer

I had the same issue and got very frustrated with it!!

So I finally got it to read the flash drive but it kept saying failed installation. I plugged the flash drive back to the computer on the ford owner website and uploaded the xml file. It asked me to download again so I started all over again deleting and re installing. After all of that I got it to work and it's perfect now.

Hope that helps.

OK, that's how mine is working too. I did notice that I can use the steering wheel controls to skip songs in Pandora now and that the song/channel playing shows up on the radio display when playing over bluetooth. Don't know if that's new or not as I didn't use Pandora much before anyway.

That's interesting, so by looking at the XML file Ford can tell if your update was successful or not. Good to know. I was surprised at the date on the XML file in my case, 2003! All of the other files were dated 3/22 the day I did the install.

Just for the hell of it I looked at the files in the "sync my ride" folder on the other USB stick that I wasn't able to use successfully. None were dated anytime recently and there was no XML file present on it at all.

After my experience I would recommend a new high quality USB drive from a well known manufacturer such as Sandisk before attempting this.

Well, I just updated my 2012 F-150 to the latest version of Sync & now it can read my text messages from my phone. (upgraded from "Gen1 v4.1.4" to "Sync v4.4" ) It took a long time to do this upgrade. And even after rebooting, nothing (radio, media, phone, etc.) was available for several minutes.

The list of upgrades lists more text messaging profiles (for more types of phones I guess).

I also upgrade my 2014 GT Premium Convertible from Gen1 v4.2.1T to Sync v4.4
I haven't noticed anything different.

The upgrade (before rebooting part) went fast, then rebooted quickly, but then the whole system wouldn't play any music for a while, while it was updating things in the background. But still much shorter than the upgrade on my truck.

Yes there are the 3 files that go to the USB drive. In the blue folder after the attempt of the update there will be an xml file in that blue folder.

My dealer said they will take care of the update on 4/2 so I guess I'll go that route. Funny how my dealer 10 miles away will do it for free and the dealer behind my house said they would have to charge $25.00

Agreed. As soon as I asked about it her immediate response was. "that's not covered under warranty but I'll see what we can do". I don't get how an electronic update is not covered.

It took me around 5 minutes of knob turning and button pushing to get mine to up load. Don't mind the voice commands either...wait until you see download complete. Took around 15 mins to finish.

Happy with the end results.

Yes.

Plugin the USB drive, press the media button.. make sure the source is USB if it isn't already... it should detect the files on the root of the USB drive and being installation.

Mine went fast.....too fast. It said installation was done in about 5 seconds and then said it was going to reboot.. .please wait.

Well, I waited for quite a while and nothing happened. So I turned the unit off, removed the USB drive, and turned the unit back on.

I was now left with a non functioning unit. I plugged the USB drive back in. I could see it was doing something because the access light on the USB drive was blinking... So, I practiced a rare virtue these days called "patience". Left the drive in and walked away for 5-10 mins. Came back and there was a message on the screen saying the installation had finished.

Unplugged the USB drive, went back to my computer, plugged in the USB drive and uploaded the .xml file to Ford.

Did my upgrade this morning. Took only 15 minutes. Set Sync to default and the did the upgrade, and paired my phone.
Very easy.

Welp, I'm not so sure about this update. Today when I first started the car my phone would not automatically connect to sync like it used to. I had to open the phone's Bluetooth settings and select sync before it would connect. When I came out from work this afternoon, again it would not automatically pair. When I said "Bluetooth audio" it said there was no BT device connected, even though the phone settings seemed to say it was. The little BT logo was displayed on the radio as well. On top of that, both times sync fell back into it's old habit of defaulting either to the USB or radio.

When I got home I tried turning off the car, opening the door until the radio display went blank and then turning on the car again. Again it defaulted to the radio or the USB again and then displayed "connecting...." and gets stuck there until I manually change the source. If I say "phone" it again just says connecting... and I cannot make any further manual or voice commands when in phone mode.

So far the only improvement with this "update" is the BT metadata display.

New Snyc Update Success?

Try resetting to defaults again and delete sync from your phone and repair it. That may help.

No, didn't leave the USB in, you have to take it out and back to your computer to finish the update. I've tried deleting the parings both in the phone and Sync and then doing a clean pair - no joy.

It's very possible something got corrupted since you stopped and restarted the update so many times.

OK, an update here just as I was thinking about doing a re-installation. Let the car sit all day yesterday and jumped in the car this morning to run a couple of errands and I'll be damned if the thing didn't work perfectly. This included a couple stops and restarts too. The radio does display "connecting..." for a few seconds, but now it seems to complete instead of getting stuck. I don't know what the problem was the other day, but I hope in continues to work the way it has today!

I wonder if you have to have the dealer only update installed first? It's 4.2.1.4
