It's more relevant for use with a manual because you don't have converter stall speed to govern your launch rpm. However, You can set your launch rpm manually with your foot, for free. No fiddling adjustments to change, no finicky wiring or new failure modes. It'll just work that way.
Two steps like these are pretty unsophisticated though and can kill the cats on a car so equipped, if used a lot.
