Gear Ratio Opinion

Stock auto 14 gt, axleback exhaust. Soon to have CAI and Tune.

That being said, it looks like my gear ratio is 3.15 with the "YY" code. Was wanting to upgrade to 3.73s. I do a lot of highway driving, so I'm curious how bad this would be cruising around 80mph. Probably not a smart move? Would the 3.55 be a happy medium? Or should I just shut up and be happy with the stock setup.

Skip the cai and keep the 3.15 gears

The 3.15's act more like a 3.55-3.60 gear depending on tire size when combined with the gears in the 6R80. Skip the gears as they'll do you no good at this point. The converter is the way to go although the price tag seems to scare people off.

Oh and skip the CAI as well.

Good advice thanks. Why are you both saying skip CAI?

Your car came with a CAI that's better than any of the aftermarket crap.

There are like a million threads about our stock CAI vs aftermarket. Really it's eye candy and the tune is what you feel. I'd spend that money elsewhere man.

I have a feeling whatever I say you'd suggest your own. But I was gonna go with Bama. Down the road later this summer I plan on supercharging the car and would want Lund I think. But I'm open to anything

Wow, you're batting zero today.

For an auto Mike Rousch from Mid Atlantic Performance would be my pick but Lund or AED would also be excellent choices. No one else.

What makes you pick those over Bama? Just the power difference? Quality? Service?

My car came with 3:73's from the factory and I couldn't be happier with them.

I do a mix of highway and city driving. The highway driving doesn't bother me at all.. sure, the RPM's will be a bit higher than the stock ratio, but it's well worth for what you gain in my opinion. The other plus is that since the RPM's are higher on the highway, you're typically out of the "drone zone" at 2k.

City driving was annoying until I just started skipping first gear and taking off in second. Much smoother that way. First gear is short... really short... but oh my goodness does it pull hard when you put your foot in it.

You have a manual transmission so this post is not relevant to the conversation.

You're point of highway driving out of the drone zone is well taken, thanks

I must have glanced over the part where he stated he had an auto.

No need to be a punk about it. Go piss somewhere else.

But just glancing and then posting wrongful information can be detrimental to the poor guy looking for the right information. And in the end you just come off looking bad.

You don't need a manual to take off in 2nd.
I have an auto and occasionally take off in 2nd.
(Put it in SPORT mode, push + to 2nd, then take off.)
