replacing rear axle bearings?

I'm getting a fairly loud howling from my right rear wheel, gets louder with speed, I have been told it sounds like a axle/wheel bearing. I know the parts are cheap, how hard is this to do? Any links to videos or articles ?

Make sure your axle isn't bent.

It's messy but straightforward.

Drain the axle
pull off the brake calipers and hang em
pull the differential cross pin
push the axles in a touch and remove the c clips
pull the axles and there be the bearings.
install is reverse
fill with diff lube of your choice and friction modifier for the diff plates.

That's about it; pretty standard stuff for all stick axles of this type.

perfect, thanks! sounds simple and i like learning and doing new things with my car, although it does make me nervous to remove axles and get into the rearend. any special tools or presses needed?

Negative. Commonplace tools only. A good socket set primarily. Would be nice to have a cheap suction gun (any parts store, about $5) to fill the rear axle.

whining at low speed while turning could be the differential. Maybe want to add a bit more friction modifier.
