I do what George explained in the install video. For third just push straight up with an open palm, works for me every time. Don't try to guide it.

You could either be manipulating the shifter too much in efforts to go into third or you left one of the stock bushing on the connecting rods

trouble with 3rd gear with mgw race spec

How reputable is this shop? If they've never installed this product before, I wouldn't be surprised if they messed something up. That's not to belittle them, it's just that the installation video - which was 49 minutes long - on MGW's website was fairly specific thus leaving a lot of room for error.

Then I'm not sure what to tell you except to just take it back to them. I doubt anything is defective given the incredible quality of the MGW.

there are no stock pieces reused with the race spec, and there is no chance of a stock piece being left behind either

I have not noticed anything at all. I just push up and just goes straight into 3rd. Like ads245 said don't feel for the gears, it goes almost automatically. It has been my favorite mod. I cant seem to get it go roll into reverse like George does in his video. My wife has to use two hands to put it in revers.

Nicely made is an understatement, the level of engineering, quality of material and machining is amazing. Its a work of art. Once you take out the old shifter and look at it compared to the MGW Race Spec, its amazing that the factory shifter worked at all. I will say that I spent as much time putting the dust boot on as installing the shifter. On a Gt I would recommend putting the rubber boot(the only part from the original re-used) on before connecting the shifter body to the linkage.
