check engine light

so im in the process of trading in my car. 14 gt. it has the check engine light on. I'm not running cats. is it easier to just replace the exhaust with the stock exhaust or just get a tune so the CEL won't show? and if anyone has any experience or advice with trading in cars at a dealership it is greatly appreciated.

I just traded mine is with the light. I wouldn't worry about it unless they give you a hard time. If they do just say you will leave.

Do dealers take catless cars? I thought it was illegal to sell a catless car

It's illegal to trade in a car that's not emissions compliant. Put it back to stock.

Why on earth wouldn't you just out it back to stock anyway? You would rather have a tuner married to your car and be out that money? On top of what grabber said. Your in Cali dude. Will never pass smog without cats let alone a CEL. And a dealer will look at that and say replacements plus labor will cost them over a G. So they will make YOU pay by giving you less. Plus, let's respect the next owner by giving them a decent car 😉 with no CELs

If you trade it as is and they go to fix the CEL and discover it has no cats, you'll wish you never owned that car.
If you trade it in and the dealer is less than honest, they clear the CEL and sell it as it is with no cats.....you're F'ing over the next fellow Mustang enthusiast!

Literally impossible in California for the dealer to resell it like that. Take it from a native Californian. Dealer has to smog it. CEL or a computer that is cleared but not ready will never pass smog. They hook up to the OBD. Not to mention the car will never pass emissions that way either.

Why would you trade a car in with any aftermarket parts at all? My last SUV I traded I took everything off that I had installed and sold for a few hundred $$$.

Not really our business, but if I may ask...
What are you trading it for?

Yeah I've been talking to a couple of friends and they suggested that I put it back to stock. So back to stock it is. 280 to put back stock exhaust. Some of them actually said that the more stock it is the more the dealership will give you for the trade in.

Yeah modded cars are not what a dealer wants to sell. People see that as a trade in and assume it was bashed on or modded incorrectly. Dealerships also want to be able to certify a used car. Then they can get more. So if you make that easy for them, they are usually more willing to pay more for your trade.

Very nice. I've heard the bama tune alone really wakes up the car.
