Top speed issue

How were the conditions? Wind speed and direction? Where was this high altitude or low? Was the track level? Just some things you might consider into the equation...
They have a big factor at 140...

Adventure till you drop.

Just a couple of questions, you were at 140mph, what was the rpm the motor was turning at that speed.
Remember that it's not all about HP when you are trying to achieve top end speed, it's about torque.
When you shifted into 6th my guess is that you were above 4250rpm.................you have passed peak torque at that rpm and just don't have enough left to keep pushing you faster. That coupled with the head wind, drag, humidity.....on and on.

I had a mod'd 97 SVT Mustang with 3.23's and ran the Silver States Classic the first year with the T45 stock trans. Although I was pushing 388hp@6500rpm at the rear wheels my torque was at 378lbft at 4800rpm. I could run 145 in 4th but when I dropped into 5th I lost speed. The reason was I didn't have enough torque to pull 5th gear. The next year I went to a Tremec 6speed and although I could pull through 5th gear I couldn't pull through 6th.
Remember that the 5.9l is only making 390lbft at 4250rpm and when you are trying to fight air, humidity, etc., the torque isn't there to continue accelerating like you are in 5th......5th gear in the stock 6spd is still 1 to 1...............when you drop into 6th you are in an underdrive situation.
The last year I raced the 97 I had a Kenne Bell Supercharger and I could pull through 6th with no issue.

Are you double sure your tuner removed your speed limiter? When logging my car runs almost 130 mph at the top of third gear with A6 and stock 3.15's. No way it will ever hit redline in 6th without an extra 1000 hp. Lol.

I know i had topped 5th, shifted to sixth and progress was slow as a slow but moving until that. I probably topped 5th red line right about 143.
Truthfully I didn't look as all my attention was on the tracks end closing in fast!
Before suspension upgrades 145 was my top on the same track with similar conditions.

Well, for one - the mustang has all they aerodynamic capability of a brick. That plays a large role in how easily you can accelerate at that speed. I think your gearing might be playing a role also.

That said, Marcie has managed 150-160 in 5th. That was with a tailwind, headed down a long gradual hill on a nearly empty stretch westbound on I-88 headed out of Chicago towards Aurora. Engine mods at the time were just CAI and tune.

...the lil STi had given up at 130, but I felt the need to stretch her legs a bit more and there was nothing ahead for miles.

To be clear; In no way am I advocating street racing, or doing dumb **** on public roads.

I've been a contender for that prestigious award for over 40 years and I used to think it was blind luck that kept me from getting it.................guess skill plays a bigger part than I thought.

You are certainly right about the Mustang, I think the drag coefficient is .36, and my wifes Performance Plus Prius is .23.
The real issue is with enough HP/TQ you can turn a brick into a missle. Case in point is the 2012 twin turbo Mustang that did over 212mph in the running mile.

Top speed issue

One reason why my car is getting a VMP tune when the TVS is installed. Another is Virginia is right next door.
