Will I Be Disappointed?

Hey guys, I've got a 2014 GT with an auto trans, and I'm thinking about trading it in for a '13 or '14 with a manual trans. If I do a fluid swap and a short throw shifter, am I going to end up being disappointed that I made the switch? Is the MT-82 really that bad? I would also be boosting the car shortly after, and I'd like to make the trans last as it will be my DD.

If you have that kind of money to throw around, I will send you a part list for items that I would like to purchase.

Keep what you have and you will have a lot of fun with it.

I will add that if I were wanting to have a consistent straight line vehicle then the auto would be where it's at.
My car is a weekend warrior at most so I enjoy the manual trans but that's me.

Lol. For the money you will lose trading in add a stall converter, tune, midpipe, and a drag slick. You won't want a manual after that...

Depends on your racing style. From a roll the auto will lose up top every time. (Drag strip is in the autos favor) Bye bye and then you hit the hazards on there as$

I'll probably never hit the strip unless I somehow run into one and decide why the hell not. It's just a fun street car for me.

I love my mt-82. I don't drag race. I like mountain driving. It's perfect for me. Only you can answer this controversial question.

Have you done anything to your MT-82?

Ford racing (same as Barton with 2 post bracket) short shifter

Steeda trans bushing insert

That's all. And it is the best manual trans I've had. I have been driving about 16 years and only had 1 auto and I swapped it to a manual after a year or so.

I will say the stick shifter is a turd. That will make you think the trans is crap. But swap that out and it's amazing. That's not the transmissions fault.

Thanks. I'm still torn on this decision. I do love my auto, but after driving a 2015 with the manual trans, I'm not so sure.

Change the transmission fluid
White line mount
Remove the spring assist
Shifter and bracket
And MGW solid bushing in the arm itself.

I need to get that solid bushing and see how it changes it. I'm pretty happy with it as it is now though.

It's only about $30 and makes a very big improvement. (Takes about a hour on jackstands) You can tell just by the look of the solid one vs the factory crap

OP, I was in same boat a few months ago. Although, I couldn't find a manual to trade my auto for. I tried all sorts of tricks to make my auto a fun car to drive, it just wasn't cutting it. I hated the fact that it would shift when I didn't want it to. I just swapped my auto tranny for a "built" mt-82 from Ben Calimer, along with RXT clutch and MGW gen 2 shift. Which came with tranny in a package deal. At the end of a day, all I had to do was pay labor from my pocket. Money for parts (including shipping + rebuild) evened me out. Make sure you get ECU and ABS module from donor car, for ease of calibration.

A vast majority of people would not agree with me on this: stage 2 build (cryo treated + rem polished gears + brass shift pads + welded shift forks + a bunch of other Ben Calimer tricks) will held up better than a T-56 "IF" you're going to push 800-1000 HP. Just pair it with MGW race spec and RXT clutch. Tremecs do break, they're not bullet proof.

I'll just throw my thoughts in.
I've had automatics since the 80's and they were ok DD's. I've had automatics in full on drag cars since before they became popular back in the 70's. The last Mustang I had was a 97 Cobra and I finally ended up putting a T56 in it.
When I went looking for my Mustang last year I picked a MT82 14 TrakPak because I wanted to have fun driving on the street..........sure an occasional fun time on the road coarse..........carving corners and maybe getting to the strip on a rare occasion. The MT82 with my 3.73's is bar none the best geared manual combo I've ever had...............and the Coyote in stock form certainly helps. To be able to drive around town in 4th gear at 25/35mph is just a pleasure. Driving in 3rd at 25 and going WOT to over 80mph @ 7krpm ain't bad either.
For me............a real Mustang is not a Mustang without a manual trans!

This. Plus a braided steel clutch line. Should look into a blowfish also and see if that is something you'll think you want/need (i did, zero regrets).

I've no complaints with mine, but it took some time and $$$ to get it there.
