5.0 vs cammed ls1

I ran a guy in a 3rd gen camaro with an ls1 from a 30 roll and got beat by at least a car link if not more. Talked to him after he said it was cammed, tune, full exhaustust and bolt ons. Idk a lot about ls1's. What kind of power would he be producing compared to my stock 5.0?

3rd gen? They only put those in 4th gen from '98 to '02. He must have transplanted it into the 3rd gen.

LS1 is no joke. I know guys running cam/heads/intake that are stupid fast. The 5.3 is even better, 1,000 horsepower on stock bottom end with turbos!

A cam in an LS1 can make anywhere from 380 whp - 440 whp on stock heads/stock intake.

With heads and intake, near 500 whp.

Combine that in a 3rd gen Fbody with a factory weight of 3100 - 3400 lbs and you have a fast car.

I had a 2006 GTO that had a full catless exhaust, can, tune and other bolt-ons and it made 420whp. That's from an LS2.

My 2014 GT with full exhaust and AED tune feels faster down low and in the midrange, but my feeling is the GTO is faster up top.

I sold the GTO before I took it to the track. However, the guy I sold it to did run it at the track and got an 11.9 at 118mph. He then pulled the motor, bored and stroked it to a 402 and put a big shot of nitrous on it. I never heard the final outcome of the car. High tens, maybe?

My 4th Gen went 11.9 with cam and bolt ons on street tires (staggered 17&18" wheels) later 11.4 with heads. The ls is no joke. Buddy of mine had an 06 ls2 gto with ls3 heads and intake and a custom cam and a converter. With some suspension and minor weight reduction that thing went 10.8. All depends on the setup. That being said a buddy of mine has a camaro z28 ls1 m6 bolt ons and cammed ported heads putting 430 to the tire. From 40-120 I can put 1-2 cars on him and I'm a stalled auto, everyone knows a roll race is not ideal for a auto. If your stock get a tune and the outcome would be different.

Cubic inches...ls1=346 5.0=302, sigle cam-in block=more bottom end toque. + the ls series of engines are old school FORD FE style blocks( Y-block) w/cross-bolted(like 427 FE) for strength. Cyl. heads very close to windsor style(symetrical port spacing and angles)......no replacement for displacement.....imagine a 427cu in. double overhead cammed engine in you mustang(ls7 + 427cu in.)

A coyote engine with 427ci would make gobs of power. But I can't imagine how big that engine would be lol

There's honestly probably a point of diminishing returns. The 5.0 makes power because it can rev to 8k, but the slugs needed to make 7.0L would sure as hell have a hard time doing that i feel. A neat discussion, but not sure how off topic it is in this thread.

^^ On top of it being a big *** block haha

The 5.3 is no better than the LS1 - people buy them because they're much cheaper to start with than an LS1.

People like to boost the 5.3 because they have an Iron block vs the aluminum LS1.

I have a buddy with a Nissan 240sx he has dumped a LS3 in to. Naturally aspirated. The car is top notch. He was even invited, and participated at the Optima street car shootout in Vegas last year. So yeah, it is nice. Anyhow, we autocross together, and he is one of the fastest cars there. He runs some kind of Dunlop 200 treadwear street tire, and is running the same lap times as purpose built race cars on road racing slicks. He recently took it to Huntsville 1/8th mile track and ran a 6.98 at 112mph on the same Dunlop tires. I honestly don't understand it. I watch him drive the car and stand there in amazement. Why is it so dang fast?

5.3 block can handle the same power the new 5.0 motors from 13 and up. Can handle
. the most power a 5.3 dyno stock was around 975whp.

The 4.8 and 5.3 have been known to put down over 1200 whp on 100% stock internals.

The coyote would **** its stock internals out between 600 - 700 whp.

These are good reads, power is measured at the crank, but you get the idea. - Stock GM LS Engine - Big Bang Theory - Hot Rod Magazine
