Put your palm on the passenger side valve cover and see if you feel a slight knock. I didnt notice the knock until i was looking hard for the tap. You wont feel it until the car is fully warmed up. The belt on the ac actually tightens with heat and the two slight acentric pulleys start fighting against each other for lack of better explaination.

Wouldn't it only occur when the ac is on then?

No because the belt is always turning. Having it on just puts more load on it... it could sound worse with it on but it wont go away just because the ac isnt on.

If it is that or the timing chain tensioner tsb is that something that's critical to get done asap or is it harmless until I get around to it?

Its the ac tensioner tsb. Right now there is a belt just stretched around the ac compressor and the crank pulley. The two pulleys are acting like two cam lobes playing tug of war when they rotate. There is a kit with a tensioner and a longer belt that bolts right up to existing holes in your timing cover. The way i figured it out was i started the car till it started ticking and turned the car off and took some sheers and cut the ac belt off and started the engine back up and voila! No more noise. Ordered the kit and bolted it on. Cant remember part numbers but if you look up the tsb the ford p# will be on it it. Or just get the dealer to do it. Need to see if you have that knock also. If you arent used to listening for abnormal engine noises you might not think much about it. Put ur palm on the pass valve cover when the engine is cold it should feel somewhat smooth wait till full op temp and feel it again and see if there is a difference. If it feels rougher then im pretty sure its that belt.

Thanks for the info. Maybe I'll snip the belt and see if it goes away.. I don't hear any knock at all. Is that the same issue?

Didn't feel any knock. It's not quite as smooth as when the cars cold but best way to describe is maybe a tad rough feeling but no knock. Since that's part of the engine, would that tsb be covered by the 5/60 power train warranty or only bumper to bumper?

Went to the dealer today to try my luck... They said it could be that but wouldn't know until they diagnosed it which I'd have to pay for. Then told me if it is that stretchy belt tsb that it's not covered under warranty and it's roughly 9 hours labor. Gheeeeyyyyyyyy. So anyone that's done it does it really take that long and what was the parts cost?

9 hours? Haha! I did it in maybe 15-20 minutes. I think some if the early models might have to change the timing cover though because they dont have the bolt holes for the tensioner. Im not sure when they revised the timing cover but look and see if you have bosses with holes on the pass side timing cover. Also if you have an auto you have to tweak the coolant lines out of the way. If i were you and you have the revised timing cover and could go without ac for a bit i would try cutting the belt off. That will tell you right off if thats what is causing the noise. Worse thing could happen is you would have to buy another belt. You could probably turn the crank and pop the belt off with a screwdriver but i didnt try that.

I guess it's covered under the 3/36 but not the 5/60 drive train warranty. Which is messed up considering its attached to the engine...

They did say looking at the tsb it said to change the timing cover to updated design. I'm sure Mines the old design. It's an early 11 model. Should be a recall imo

It's nothing major.
Just the early 2011's had a 6 bolt flywheel vs a 8.
Also I'm pretty sure the first 2011's had a different head bolt design

Autos aren't included.
It's not the pattern. It's the design they first used. I believe they made them stronger. Nothing you have to wore about anyways, unless your looking at mid 600-700hp. Or your experiencing a lot of back pressure from a turbo setup.

Wasn't directed towards your situation. Was just adding there were some small differences.

2013 MY they went to a smaller head bolt than the 11-12 for whatever reason and redesigned the pistons and also removed the oil squirters.
