What is Ford's answer to the 2016 Camaro?

In the past, Mustang is the fastest, thanks to the better power to weight ratio. It is closely followed by the Camaro, and the Challenger is the slowest. From the 2016 model on, the Camaro will be the fastest one. The new Alpha platform from Cadillac ATS makes it much lighter, while the HP numbers are improved as well.

As a result, more Camaros will be sold than Mustangs. Ford definitely doesn't want that to last. I predict Ford will do some serious work in weight reduction in the mid stage of the S-550 Mustangs, just like what they did to improve the HP numbers to the 2011 S-197 Mustangs. How do you think?

Not sure if better number is a cut and dry Camaro outselling the Mustang. I'm sure they are working on something to push out more power though

Ford's answer to the 2016 Camaro is the 2016 Mustang. Ford has nothing to worry about. The mustang has survived for 50 years straight. The S550 will crush Camaro sales

Ford has the Camaro totally taken down. S550 is way better than the 2016 redesigned Camaro.

I'm not sure what the op means when he says in the past ford has always been on top. Third gen f bodies and fox bodies were pretty equal stock for stock. Once the fourth generation Camaro came out it crushed the mustang performance wise. In 2011 the mustang did have the weight advantage.

Now sales wise ford has always sold more mustangs then Chevy did camaros. So it's important do remember performance does not always equal better sales especially considering that the majority of sales are the 4 cylinder/ v6 models

I could really care less if the Camaro is faster or whatever else it does better. I'll still keep my Mustang. Its not just about numbers to me. I'm not racing I just enjoy my Mustang and its plenty fast enough with lots of potential if I decide to do more.

If I were the chief designer of Mustang, I would consider to reduce its weight by

(1) shaving off the trunk and make the rear end like the Chrysler Crossfire:

That could mean significantly shorten lengthen and less weight.

(2) using more aluminum in the body structure, like the new F-150.

If anyone drives both the Camaro and the Mustang back to back, and tries to see out of both --- like change lanes or look up outside of the car, or see behind the car well or be first in line at a red light and try to see when it turns green--- the Mustang is the ONLY choice.
The Camaro's outward visibility is abysmal in all directions.

What did Ford do for the seven years between 2002 and 2009 when NO Camaros were built?
There's no left Twix right Twix big conspiracy secret back and forth build Cold War going on.... Ford is just building cars, improving where it can and still being affordable. This isn't Fords bread and butter, put food on the table model. It's a tiny side thought.
The money maker and backbone of the company is their F150 with a side of Fusion and Focus.
The Mustang will get minor tweaks every couple years so the engineers justify their jobs and keep it somewhat fresh.

Going to have to reduce weight across the board due to 36 MPG requirement for 2016. Better get the stang you want soon, as I predict the end of the V-8 by 2025, when MPG goes to 55 average.

All right, guys!

How about mimicing the rear end of Mercedes AMG GT or the Porsche Panamera? They may not look sexy to many of you, but physically, that's the best way to reduce the length of the car, while at the same time to make the rear seats tolerable.

I for one would prefer the Stang to be two seater but ya know that ain't gonna happen.

What is Ford's answer to the 2016 Camaro?

How about Ford just keep on doing what they have been doing which has sold millions of Mustangs uninterrupted for over 50 years and leave that high end low production crap for the Europeans. And remember who didn't need a government bailout?

We Ford could always bring back the 2014 Mustang GT! It's still the lightest, highest power to weight ratio, and fastest they've built yet! Not to mention great fuel mileage! Lol

The newest comparison test of the GT and the SS in this month's Car and Driver says that, even though the Camaro outperforms the GT in all measurable ways --- they would still pick the Mustang as a daily driver.
Easier to see out of, better to drive on the street, more comfortable.....I don't think Ford needs to do much to the Mustang right now. As stated above....the Mustang sells in such small numbers in the overall Ford catalogue, that even if the Camaro outsells it, it is not going to be worth it to Ford to invest lots of $$'s just to play catch up.
Like 435 HP is not enough (and it dynoes MUCH closer to the SS's claimed numbers!!)?
The 55 lb/ft of additional torque in the new SS is impressive however. With the bore and stroke of the 5.0, I don't think Ford could increase theirs enough to matter.

This is pretty much the way it always has been. I remember when I was a GM guy it the late 90's the Camaro/Firebird on paper was the better car but the Mustangs just always seemed better in reality especially once you started modding.
