MGW Race Spec - new compact version

Howdy,

I didn't see anything about this updated version of the MGW Race Spec posted - apologies if it's a dupe.

I ordered a MGW Race Spec for my 14 GT a couple weeks back and received it yesterday. Turns out it's a new compact version. The 'frame' is much the same as before and installs in much the same way as previously, although some of the hardware has been upgraded. The shifter itself is now more compact and is received fully assembled from MGW. No disassembly / reassembly is required and it can be dropped into place from inside the car with the boot already installed, prior to lifting the tranny back into place.

I installed mine today - took around 3 hours total and would have been closer to 1.5 hours if I had a lift. Putting the boot on was literally 30 seconds work. The shifter does need to be installed without the boot to verify the reverse lockout is set correctly. It's then removed, the boot fitted and then dropped back into place. Sounds a little cumbersome but it's less than 20 minutes work total plus it eliminates all the fighting with the boot.

I'd read a lot of reviews of this shifter before ordering it and to be honest I was skeptical as to how good it could really be. I took the car out for a 1 hour test ride this afternoon, starting cold from around 45 degrees. I'll be honest - I was stunned from the moment I pulled out of my driveway. I haven't driven a car that shifted so well in a long long time. Smooth, precise and perfectly weighted. My car only had 7000 miles on it before install so the tranny was likely still in decent shape, though I experienced some pretty tough shifts and lockouts on a fairly regular basis. All solved now though. Big thanks to George and the folks at MGW. I can't recommend their shifter enough. Get writing those letter to Santa...

MGW is one of those companies that just makes rock solid legit ****. Even their stuff for the older Mustangs is very top notch.

You will love it, although mine touches the side of the trim when in reverse (not a real issue though).

The MGW shifter is on my radar. Did lots of reading on different forums of the guys who have them and they all pretty much say the same thing. Fantastic. I was told Steeda is coming out with a full shifter for the 15-16's fairly soon.

the race spec is an amazing piece! I have the original race spec they introduced around this time last year that attaches to the chassis still, I'm thinking of selling it and getting the latest version, they make works of art for sure

I'd be willing to bet they'd do some sort of "trade up" program with you like they did with the people who had the old 1st gen MGW shifters. Although maybe not as the functionality of these are supposedly the same vs the 1st Gen MGW not having the full blown shifter replacement.

The new compact race spec only saves 30 minutes of install time compared to the original race spec. I talked to an MGW guy and he said it's not even worth paying the $30 in shipping to trade up to the compact.

It really does look like (and verified by MGW) that this is just a form factor thing and the functionality is the same.
