Leaky Breather Valves

Why do these cars get the leaky breather valves??

I had an expansion tank on my old car, and am considering getting another.

Should I get the valve replaced too? Its all gunked up with oil

It's not an "expansion tank" that's for the cooling system. You mean an oil separator.

I think you'd rather have these "leaky" valves than the engine sealed up tight and be blowing crankcase gases past your rings and/or out of every gasket. These are supposed to leak to relieve crankcase pressure. Taking them out and cleaning them up does no harm but is rarely needed if you change your oil regularly.

Nahh I'm talking about the valve on the top of the rear axle. It's on the passenger side

I replaced my diff cover with the finned cover and while I was at it, I moved the vent to the top of the cover. Problem solved.

OIC, well, Ford has a cheap fix in the form of an extended hose and turkey baster thing to catch this stuff. Steep ratio gearsets encounter this more due to the greater pumping action.
