WHICH Michelin Pilot- (too many versions)

Instead of lowering her, I'm just going to get the best tire y'all have recommended here, the MICHELIN PILOT SPORT.

I love the sound of the GT500 axel backs and detest TIRE NOISE !

The question is, which specific tire?
  • Pilot Sport A/S 3 all season tire P245/45ZR19 98W
  • Pilot Sport A/S 3+ (W- or Y-Speed Rated)
  • Pilot Sport 3 245/45R19 102Y XL
  • Pilot Primacy 245/45ZR19

This car has the factory 19" aluminum/black wheel option (see photo) which goes nicely with this car.

Ideally, I would like to stay with the factory tire size. I don't want to deal with speedo issues.

I want to do front/rear the same size for tire rotation purposes.

I am going with the recommendations of this forum which is "If you can stand the price, get the Michelin, they are well worth it"

So instead of doing any suspension mods (I am happy with her stance with the factory 19" tires/wheels) I choose to simply go with the best tires available.

My three big tire issues are NOISE, RIDE & WET TRACTION.

At this moment, I am unsure as to which of these Pilots would best fit my needs.

The car is a daily driver in SW Florida. (I don't know what a PP car is....) Wife & I also do road trips with this car, so comfort & road noise are big issues. I don't do track days or dragstrips, and am not really into burnouts and doughnuts, although I did have fun back in the day with my '69 Mustang. Compared to that, this car is sophisticated and TIGHT-TIGHT-TIGHT. The factory 19's do make a significant and very noticeable difference. I do love pushing her into a turn and feeling the rear end slide ever so slightly under power.

Since the Michelin Pilot Super Sport version is not available in my size, instead of choosing a less appropriate PILOT model, perhaps I should go with the Continental, which is also ranked high on this forum, but not as high as the Pilot Super Sports.

I do respect and appreciate your opinions.

You are in Florida? Get the summer tire, Pilot Super Sports. Not in your size? Don't you have 19" rims? Put the same size tire from a Track Pack. It's just a touch wider that yours.

THANKS!

I can live with the 2 MPH speedo difference with the size change.

If I lowered the car, those would work, but (see comparison attached) the 3/4 inch smaller tire in that wheel well with standard ride height isn't going to be pretty.

My idea was to NOT lower the car, but to keep her in the best tires possible.

Best RIDE, least NOISE, best WET TRACTION.

There are only 3 Pilot series available in my size:
  • Pilot Sport A/S 3 all season tire P245/45ZR19 98W
  • Pilot Sport A/S 3+ (W- or Y-Speed Rated)
  • Pilot Sport 3 245/45R19 102Y XL

or maybe I should just get the Continental DW?

It did not review higher than the Super Sports, however for the Pilot models in my size, the DW actually rated higher at Tire Rack.

Stock sizes:
235/50R18 - Base / V6
245/45R19 - Better
255/40R19 - Brembo package (Best)

So the 255/40ZR19 (Brembo Package size) tires are still a stock and very common size. So you should have no fitment issues at all.

You'll appreciate the 1/2" extra width, that will translate to a lot better grip acceleration & cornering.

Also smaller tire is like having better gears... = feels like more hp.

I've had the Super Sports before, best tire I ever had.

Great tire, the Michelin Sport. Had a set on my 2011. After 25K on them, they still looked and performed great. However, I can't remember which specific one from your list I had.

I had Michelin Pilot Super Sports on my 02 GT Convert they were great tires. When I need to replace the tires on my 2014 GT I will go back to these.

If you wanted to go to the Michelin Pilot Super Sport, 255/45R19 would be the closest match, and acceptable size to your 245/45R19.
Of course being Summer only tires (better traction) their wear rating is less.

I'd say the AS3 if you will encounter winter conditions of colder weather more frequently than not, other than that, stick with the summer PSS, which is excellent in the rain.

The AS3 is no snow tire or ice radial. It's legal and will get you going stopping and turning but, that's it. It's phenomenally good in the wet, a trait it shares with the summer PSS and maybe improves on over that.

The Primacy is a mileage tire, not a performance one.
