3.31 to 3.73 report 14GT manual

I had my factory 3.31 gears changed to the FRPP 3.73 kit from AM two weeks ago and wanted to share my experience. (Slightly lengthy but I want to be thorough for those like me with not much knowledge on gears and real world non drag strip results)

The car is a 14GT manual with 25k miles and no performance mods whatsoever, still has base model 18" wheels and has had no previous issues or problems.
I previously owned an 11 GT manual, base, with Roush Axle backs and resonator delete. Apparently...also it had 3.73s and I am just now knowing this by my recent gear change in my 14... Seat of the pants and grin factor.

The 11 had from the beginning, made me think holy crap this thing is fast and dangerous when I got on it hard..especially through 2nd and 3rd gear....by then I was well up to triple digit speeds and it hadn't taken much more time to say holy **** and try to keep it in a straight line. Since I've had my 14...it just didn't do that ...not nearly like the 11 but I chalked it up to getting used to it and the excitement fading.

Now it's back! ...I actually use 6th gear now...something I remember doing with the 11 but not in my 14...ever. Not even at 80 on the highway. It seemed to bog or have NO power in 6th for even speeding up some while cruising on the interstate. The 3.31s absolutely rob most of the fun from the 5.0.

The install was $300 from a local Mustang enthusiast with his own garage business and had done gears many times before. It involved bearings and the whole kit, which I understand needs some special tools and a quality install to prevent problems or even noise. I know he undercharged...it took him a whole day, taking his time and evidently the rear brakes come off, the axles, drive shaft, the differential of course and then some very slight grinding or trimming of pinion shoulder height to make it fit just right.

For a few days after, I naturally heard a little more noise back there but very slight and probably exaggerated by my concern and increase in trying to notice noise...that's since faded as I'm not worried my rear end won't explode or start making awful noises suddenly.
Now I'm actually enjoying it...it has that holy **** factor again. I will never buy a new Mustang without the 3.73s even if it means having to order it and wait. * I sort of like the new California Special S550, but as I see I can't get it with 3.73s (only 3.55) I will wait for a future model I can live with looks wise that also can have 3.73 option.
Gas mileage is pretty much just the same as before.... I'm using taller gears daily driving of course and that's all I can figure makes it equal out. (18.1 avg. according to car computer)

**The speedo...was off of course..way off! Reading I was going much faster than actual speed...about 12 Mph in 5th gear at 2000 rpm. My Ford garage corrected that for me with a computer update for $60. I was going to live with it but it was off so much, I couldn't keep it like that.
It was well worth the $ for me and I had been worried I wouldn't feel much..that maybe 4.10 would be better.. I'm glad I didn't do the 4.10. That's too low.
I would say that the 3.73 with manual and for the full NASCAR experience...resonator delete + whatever axleback you choose...you're gonna have a good time
If you've only driven 3.31 5.0s and never a 3.73 , you're missing out..that's the way it really should be and I can only guess they put in 3.31s to show a better mpg but all it does is take the nuts out of it.

The slight whine you are hearing is because you forgot to plastidip the gears before installing them!!!!

I went from 2.73 to 3.73... Boy the difference is incredible.

Glad your install went well.

Omg my plasti dip legacy won't die. I swear, I'm a changed man! More plasti dip tolerant... Just not for me... It's a gateway mod....leads to other things like all sorts of lotions and creams..bathrobes... Fancy organic foods, sandals and herbal remedies... Like I said, it's good for some and not my cup of tea. I'm even alright with caliper covers... If they're on your car

3.31 to 3.73 report 14GT manual

My 11 5.0 is a 3:31 car. I test drove a 13 5.0 with a 3:73 rear end and it felt like a different car. I'll keep my 3:31 gearing for a while though, lots of weekend highway driving and city driving during the week. Your right about 6th gear.... I usually down shift to make a pass on the fwy.

I get 16.1mpg according to the computer though .

My car is an auto I think it comes with 315s. Any suggestion on what gear to upgrade to? Need better throttle response.

Upgrade your tune, not your gears in an auto.

Mine is stock with a tune and it will incinerate tires at will.

Outer limit, if you insist, is 3:31. There is so much first gear in the auto there is no need for lots of rear gear.

Eventually you may wish to get a converter if you are serious.

I suggest you stick with the 3.15's since they won't help you with throttle response. Plus they're a pretty good gear for the auto.

The downside to 3:73's is it's really easy to piss people off in traffic taking off from a stop light.

You have to shift like a mad man just to get going as fast as the minivan next to you. It also throws people off behind you because it "sounds" like you're going fast, but you're just taking your time.

I tend to take off from 2nd in traffic just keep pace.

Sometimes I skip shift from first to third...or if I start off in second I skip to fourth.

Yep. It's either looking like your trying to be king of the blvd. or your Mustang is being 'dragged' by the grandma next to you lol.
I think people underestimate the car because it sounds like your working hard just to keep pace - until you bury the pedal just a lil deeper and then it's "bye-bye"

I had to adjust my gearing with tire size on my stick car with 3.73s. The gear would force a 5th shift just before the stripe when I needed the car pulling hard. 28" kept it in fourth, by reducing gear overall.. good for 11s the setup but 3.55s would have made more tire choices available.

These cars are pretty easy to launch with a manual. Way easier than my old big cam smallblock second gen Camaro I had back in the day.
