Track test

Took the 14 out to the track for the first time, for it at least.

Learned some things....

My nitrous had an activation issue so I ran na.

The car has too much tire (28x10x16 drag slick) and the world's tightest torque converter. Neither of which help 60 foots. Best was 1.9 and thus the car sat at 12.5 all night. The mph was 112 which is consistent with my manual car passes at the same et. Problem is there isn't anything I can really work on to make the car quicker, unlike the manual, where every pass is a project. I squeezed the manual down to high 11s with practice but, the auto is just going to do what it wants.

Checked on weight. Car is up about 40 pounds on my similarly loaded old manual car, which is pretty good for being auto.

I am thinking I will need to get the nitrous working to get the necessary fun injection, lol

Why not change the converter????
Or change to a 15" wheel/tire.

Well, because I'm down with severe polyarthritis right now and can't handle the effort of pulling the trans. Plus, this is DD and I'm not totally cool with loose converter driving character and I'd need to retune for it as well. Even dropping the tire height to 26" won't help the fact the converter is too tight and the engine doesn't make alot of power at the rpm it flashes to.

Well, because I am down with severe polyarthritis right now and can't handle the effort of pulling the trans. That and I'm not totally cool with loose converter driving character on a DD. Even dropping the tire size to a 26" won't change the fact the converter is too tight and the car doesn't make alot of power at the rpm it flashes to. On the road, it's great, because you can't really put more power down through road tire on greasy pavement but, it's a big handicap at the prepared track. Hence, the other option is make the car make more power and that means taking the risk on spraying it out of the hole.

Ok...I understand.
I've never had a DD that I raced...loosening the converter on my last drag car....along with changing the merge collector....I went from a 1.4 to 1.29 60'...
although we are not talking apples and apples I would think you could come up with a converter that would satisfy both your needs...

Your auto trans is going to "do what it wants to do?" Let me correct that statement. Your auto is going to shift better then you ever dream of, it is also going to shift the same every time and be consistent every time. With a tune it will only get better with a firmer shift. Unless your at the track like John Force and drive a manual you will be chasing consistency every time you go to the track.

The guys who own a Circle D 4C converter will tell you it is very friendly for a DD. From my research on the Circle D it is like the stock converter until you flash the throttle so DD should be no different then what you have now. If you don't want a converter, don't want to retune and don't want to get a 15inch tire then you simply don't want to have a faster E/T. So what more is there to talk about?

Ease up, buddy. I put a manual trans version of this car into the 11s on a 91 tune and a tire. I can friggin' drive. I can't change the way the auto performs and I'm trying to get the best out of it, as is. That's what I do; I maximize what I have and then I make selected mods. The tires I have are good condition and I'm not tossing them because they are a little less than ideal for size.

I am tuned, I have torque-in-a-bottle ready. I needed to see what the starting point was n/a and it's revealed it's pretty strong but, needs some help off the bottom in a prepped track situation.

I don't see a converter in your list of mods...is that because it's a big job to change it out? Cuz it is, I've done it many times

The converter is coming soon. I spent some mustang money on my 4 wheenin rig. I've done a converter and many clutches. The converter will give you 1/2 second on your E/T so to me that's maximizing the worst part of our auto trans. you might get a 11.9 at your track with just a tune and tire but here in SoCal you will run a 12.5 at best and that's pushing it, that's a tail wind with perfect weather.

I agree it's a good answer....I'm just physically not able to do the work just now. I'll get better first and then decide if I'm going there.

It wasn't easy getting that 11.9 but, sticking with it made it possible. What makes Cali so bad? We have **** gas where I am, too....

Track test

Yeah you'd probably get a better time in the fall time in Cali, assuming you chose a track that's close to sea level .

Then again, where in Canada do you live?

I run at California speedway 1/4 mile and have also ran at Irwindale ca 1/8th mile. When I ran my 12.4 a hand full of coyote guys though I was full bolt on because they were running 12.9 to high 13s. The 2015 stangs were 13.5 at best. I seen one guy running 12.00 flat, unknown mods but real loud with bigs and littles mounted. Every time i've gone back I cant get better then a 12.8. guys have told me many times CA speedway is super slow.

Wow. 12.5 91 tune and tired na doesn't sound so bad now from my autocar. My track is 25' asl but is prone to high humidity. You can get magic air there sometimes. I'm on the west coast of Canada.

My home track is Mission Raceway and I live in the tri cities.

I've been racing at Mission for decades.

How about these...I have no idea what you have on your side of the boarder.

Road Course - Pacific Raceways : Pacific Raceways

or

Sport Driving - Pacific Raceways : Pacific Raceways

You can always come down to PIR.......I've got some friends in the Corvette and BMW clubs and may be able to sneak you in....I'm going to be taking the ATS-V out for giggles.

We all have to start at the bottom....If you haven't had an formal road course training I'd ride with you for a few laps and help you negotiating the course.
